Have a alli insert made for the fork dia 30mm so it pinches the same as the fork with a internal dia hole of 17mm. If needed could be shaped like a top hat if needed:rob

Should be able to get a bush machined, fairly easy job. Or why not use a wheel suited to the forks? I'm doing a similar thing and am going to use the whole KTM front end forks, wheel and brakes etc.

How hard was it to fit the forks and clamps to the BM steering head?

1. Use a KTM(?)wheel.
2. Have an axle made that's 30mm, stepped down to 17 at the point you need to centre the wheel, then Bam-Bams spacer through the other side leg.

I have a set of KTM yokes for 50mm fork stanchions, fitted with a steering stem for the GS But I'm not going to use them now...

Have you a picture of the bottom of the left hand leg?
As I have a feeling that arrangement does not use a 30mm dia spindle.
The left hand leg is the datum, and the spindle nut pulls the hub over to the left, then the right hand leg pinch screws tighten on to a 30mm boss on the spindle.
So, your spindle can be made of a size to suit your requirements as long as the boss has a 30mm dia for the pinch arrangement to hold.

If you decide to have a bush machined then you will have to have a slit it lengthwise (you could use a hacksaw) to let the fork clamp on the axle as well as on the bush. Align the slit in the bush with the one in the fork clamp.

I'm not saying that getting a bush is the way to go- in fact I have no idea, but if that's what you decide then you will need a slit. :thumb2

Are you trying to use the original wheel ? On a GS the axle diameter is 25mm and when fitting USD forks, there axle is usually 20mm so you can swap out the wheel bearings for ones with a smaller ID. Personally, I would be trying to fit a bigger axle than 17mm, that small could be bent easily.
Whose Clamps are you using ?

Some Hondas come from the factory with a 17 mm spindle and top hat spacers to fit 25 mm holes in the forks so it it isn't a bodge.

I think it was the old twin leading shoe 175 ? mm item and probably explains why they were a popular swap on cafe racers.

Thanks to all the replies.
We are trying to consider all the options.
