Bigger windscreens to solve buffeting/noise

.. extra height the top of the screen does wobble a bit. This isn't a criticism of the NN screen btw, it's well made..it's just a reflection that a bigger screen doesn't seem to be the panacea I was hoping for. ....
Anyone feel similar, or has anyone fitted the NN winglets - do they help?

I've had the NN big screen on for a year or so... better, especially on motorway, but not perfect. And rattles & creaks a bit.... so I've just ordered Tobinators, Tobinator anti-vibration kit AND winglets from Nippy Norman (yep, got carried away... UKGSer made me do it - reading glowing reviews is fatal!)

Hopefully I'll get the goodies today and be fitting over the weekend... I'll post the outcome next week.

got a touratech deserto 3 screen dosnt make a bit of differance but looks good

I tried nippy widescreen (higher & wider than oe) and the tobinators but although the buffeting changed it was still bad at high speed. I then cut the nippy screen down toquite low and the buffeting is much much less although obviously I get more wind blast it's not too bad.

I have just fitted the NN Higher & Wider screen and figure it nees a couple of inches cut off the top. I was wondering what's the best way to go about cutting though the plastic of the screen? Dremel or is there a better way?

Thanks,
Alan

I've got the standard winglets and the touratech spoiler. I commute every day as well plus do one or two long trips each year across Europe. I don't want a bgger screen because they aren't great off-road and I prefer to take it off and store it.

My solution is wear ear plugs.

GIVI AIRFLOW Screen

Has anyone tried the GIVI AIRFLOW Screen for the GS. ( ref: AF330)? If "Yes" is it a goer? Thanks.

I have the AF330 and NN winglets. The combination is excellent. Triple-digit speeds, visor open at motorway speeds. It's highly recommended, and probably the cheapest option.

If you do a search for Givi Airflow you'll find a VERY long thread (with photos) where everyone with the AF330 is very happy. Including me.

Bigger screens DO NOT solve buffeting.....and in many cases, they just make it worse :blast

These pics make it fairly obvious, although they are somewhat simplistic....

Those came from HERE

Some more reading HERE and HERE

From that lot, you can see why this combination works so well (Although the gap under the screen made possible by the Tobinators isn't that apparent.....he's got that gap, plus a flip to take the now-uninterrupted airflow OVER his head)

Sometimes the simple addition of a couple of spacers or thick washers to the lower screen mount bolts can allow enough air to creep under the screen lip and remove the vacuum effect, which causes the "Von Karmann vortices, which is actually what is hitting you if you suffer from "Buffeting"

Don't forget, all of the suppliers are out to make money from selling you something to cure a simple physical problem......and at a £100 upwards, it's a good business for them.

Understanding the problem and trying a few simple (and very cheap) solutions is far more likely to give you a buffet-free ride and let you keep your hearing......paying tonnes for extra large barn door screens not only makes you look silly, but probably won't work :rob

Bill is about right :thumb2

If I raise the screen on my GT (easy to do as it's electric) the sensation of buffeting* increases. But it is very dependant on speed, any cross wind, the helmet I am wearing (the new Neotec Shoei is different to the Multitech, which is different to my Arai full face, which was different to the quite dreadful Nolan) and the ear plugs I have in.

If I want no buffeting, I take the car.... Come to think of it, Bill think's the GT is a car.

*God knows what that really means. Some bods seem to want to ride along in a bubble of calm silence ('cept for the Remus, mate) whilst others seem afraid of losing their head in the slip stream..... Others want to ride along with their flip front up at 90 or more.... but would probably blanch at the idea of an open face melon basket as it would be unsafe.

Nippy Norman's Higher & Wider Screens - R1200GS

OK, I've read the technical explanation for buffeting and can understand the concept of the screen creating a vacuum into which tumbles a stream of fast moving air - a bit like the "foul air" produced by box-shaped vehicles.

Nevertheless, I'm looking to replace my OEM standard R1200GS screen and have considered the 2 available "higher and wider" NN screens. One is 15cm higher and 3cm wider; the other is 21cm higher and 6cm wider.

Is anyone able to provide reviews after long-term use of either of these?

I'm a shade under 6' and find the standard screen is best at it's lowest and most raked back but, even then it's still very noisy and on the motorway, particularly with high traffic volumes, it feels like someone is trying to twist off my head.

I have read that the OEM GSA screen is good but it would cost the fat end of £350 to buy, what with the screen at £200, the upper support at £130, plus a handful of fittings...

I have a nearly new adventure screen for sale.no scratches.all fittings.£220.00.winglets available too.definately worth fitting these at the same time.

GIVI AF330 screen, cann't beat it. Less than £150, bargain.:beerjug:

This.

Don't bother with the 'higher and wider' options - a bigger slab of plastic is not what's needed. You need one which is actually a different shape.

Try the Givi Airflow before spending hundreds on the other options.

It's going to be the Givi AF330

Wierpig - thanks for the GSA option but I think I have been convinced to go the Givi Airflow route. Hopefully someone will PM you for your screen etc.

The only downside to the AF330 option appears to be the lack of the ready-made GPS mount bar the GSA screen offers but virtually everyone seems to rate the overall performance of Givi screen very highly.

Thanks all for useful input :beerjug:

Thumbs up for the Givi screen, having just gone from a GS to a GSA I wish I could put the GIVI in the GSA. I'm sure it would solve your buffeting problem.

By the way, my old GIVI is now for sale if you are interested.

Yes it's a definite improvement, especially in respect of the vibrating Tour X peak and the resultant resonating eyeballs. Having said that, I'm just about to try a Z Technic screen which someone very kindly gave me.

I don't think they've got a European or British importer, let alone an English agent. I collected mine from the factory in Santa Ana and brought it home in my suitcase. ISTR it was about £35 for cash.

ZTechnik screens are available in the UK from this guy.

I use the 21" Adventure screen on a standard GS plus BMW winglets and find it gives a great ride with minimal buffeting. It comes in 23" and 19" and can be bought to fit with or without the extra Adventure bracket. At the lowest setting I can look over it by a few inches and I'm only 5'10". Hope this is useful.
I could provide a photo but I can't stand the feedback.

I have a ZTechnik extra tall fitted to my GSA and its perfect but thats for me at 6'4''. There are several sizes available and they are as well made as the originals and If you speak to Custom Cruisers they may have a demo screen for you to try.

I'm 6'2" and got on well with the tobinators on a NN High and wide with an Aerotrim. It worked nicely, and I didn't get much buffeting in smooth air, but it was noticeable in a cross wind, or following another vehicle on the motorway. It also needed the Touratech screen support to stop it flapping about.

I had a re-think when the high and wide broke in a low speed drop.

I now have the Givi A330, which is much better. I kept the tobinators, but to be honest, I don't really need them any more.
