Hi,

Looking for some advice about security for my new GSA. I've had some reasonable insurance quotes (£180 fully comp), so I'm not too worried about getting an extra 5% discount. However I'd like a visible deterrent and some added piece of mind when parking up on European tours.

I currently use an Oxford enigma disc lock on my KTM Duke (a minimum requirement of that insurance policy) and whereas Motorrad insurance don't demand anything better, I'm very concious that the GSA is considerably more valuable.

Looking at M & P, Demon Tweeks etc, it seems that many of the 'approved' lock/chain options are very heavy and would take up plenty of pannier space.

Suggestions about neat security solutions that aren't too bulky (enough space under the seat?) would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Howard.

There is a special holder for a u-lock under the seat. I think one of the ABUS locks fits.

However, unless you carry a chain and fix it to something solid, you'll never be sure its there when you get back. A u-lock or disc lock will only stop the real amateur.

It's the ABUS Granit X-Plus 54 (300mm shackle length) lock which fits in the holder under the seat, you can get them from NIppy Normans on lline here

You could always use the Arbus shackle lock and another Arbus cable with eyelets, Not too hard to cut for the determined thief but is quite long and esay to stow on the bike.

Just ordered one from these folks http://www.bikesyoulike.co.uk/product/4087/Abus_Granit_XPlus_54_DLock_Gold_Sold_Secure

£45.50 delivered for the 300mm one (last option on drop down screen) and includes some form of push bike carrier as well :thumb
That's £20 cheaper than Nippy Normans

That's a great price especially as it includes free shipping (even to Norn Ireland).

Never used additional locks on my bikes but I have thought it something I should be considering and the ability to carry this under the seat is a real benefit.

I am impressed with bikesyoulike. Ordered the Abus lock yesterday and it arrived today :thumb So not only good value but very fast service :D

Also the lock as expected is a perfect fit under the seat of my GSA.

Is this lock long enough to enable you to lock the front wheel to something or is it just for through the forks or something?

Are they strong as a chain and padlock (heavy duty)?

Only long enough to go through the forks etc you would need an extra cable/chain to lock it to a post.
As for strength it has a Sold Secure Gold rating so I assume that it should be as good as a lock and chain with the same rating.

What's USH and/or TEXKF??? :nenau

Which is the one to go for?

The same question I came to. My google-based understanding is that it refers to the two different mounting bracket options. For a GS / GSA you won't be using either of them as the lock goes in the special holder under the seat. I ordered the one with the more expensive TEXKF holder as is was only a couple of quid more, but looks much more versatile - e.g. for fitting to to my other motorbike.

e.g. see bottom of...

These are only suitable for mounting to a push bike - would not want to use these on a motorcycle. I went for the cheapest option which still means I could use the lock on my push bike as well.

NOW WITH AN EXTRA 10% OFF!!!

That's £20 cheaper (one third) than my local shop!!

ABUS Granit X-Plus 54 (300mm shackle length)

Does anybody know whether this will fit under the seat of the lowered frame 2008 GS?
I am due to pick one up in a few days :bounce1 and a lock might be a good investment.
Cheers
