For my 1984 XL500R

Imported from France in March, very good condition. The bike has been subject to a rebuild, completed by the seller’s best friend (seller owned a 250 model). Owner had passed away leaving the bike to his friend. He sold it because he couldn’t start it..

I have completed the necessary import processes and paid all duties due. NOVA receipt and number in my possession. What is required is registering with the DVLA for an age appropriate plate (which I can do - just haven’t got around to it).

The bike is running and rides well, however the front brake is awful. I’m guessing it can be improved by someone with more knowledge / ability than myself.

She was bought for local pottering and country lanes, having lusted after one when a schoolboy. Now owning one, I find starting it is a bugger. I’ve started it several times in my ownership upon which she ticks over beautifully - problem is I can’t do it easily or on command. She seems to respond better to a ‘sweep’ of the kick starter rather than a short sharp kick. A combination of idiocy and little legs means for me, this is difficult., nay impossible.

I’d be happy to keep her just to look at, but finding myself owning a 701 enduro and Beta 300, I would like a road orientated bike (ideally with luggage but not a deal breaker) to complete shortish tours and road trips.

I’m thinking someone may have a suitable bike, fancies a classic 80’s trail bike and has long legs (or more skill than I) who would consider an exchange. I value the bike as it stands at circa £3000. I’d be happy to add £2-3k for the right bike.

Bikes I’d consider are an eclectic mix so I’ve put a list together below. Electric start, ability to put in my van on my own (701 fits, R9T fitted, 1250 did but was too heavy)

So:

1200TC triple black (last of them so 2011/12)
V7 Guzzi post ‘21
V85TT
R9T (all varieties)
XADV 750 (wild card)
F800GS (Trophy)
WHY..

The list will probably grow. Popping the advert up as I can’t be bothered again with the hassle of selling via national advert after regent experience selling my 1250. Someone on here would be much preferred to do a deal with.

Very nice, I recall seeing that for sale when it was still in France earlier in the year.
Slow easy kick starting but as you've found out it's long kick.

Seller was a lovely gent, much alcohol was consumed which resulted in a longer trip than anticipated.
Very nice indeed.
Your starting problems remind me of my Armstrong MT 500 which was an absolute sod to start when hot!
I’m sure there’s a ‘knack’ and I’m tempted to persevere but I do want a push button and go roadie
That is a lovely bike , a bit too tall for me i suspect, 29 inch inside leg .
I’m 30” leg, it’s not tall at all. Lower than any of my recent bikes (1250, 701, 300 Beta, 800GS, Norden). You do need to swing that kicker though

Im interested if you decide on a straight sale, although concerned about starting issue as these were known to be an easy starting bike .

Clearly not for me :D

Seriously, I suspect a long standing back complaint inhibits putting my all into it. The MOT guy started it easily and when I’ve been successful I suspect it was because I got the ‘sweep’ correct rather than an aggressive kick like my two stroke enduros required.

Straight sale is also fine, I was just bored on a wet Sunday and waffled away. My intention is book it into a local guy who knows these to confirm/ensure all is well and it’s me that’s the problem. Everything else on the bike is good (front brake excepted) so have no reason to suspect a fuelling issue

I owned the 250 version and it also had poor brakes I fitted a complete later front end off an disc brake xr250, on my later xlr250 I did a front end swap for a conventional fork front end off a cr250 glws

Hi Gooner-

I can see a decompressor on the exhaust valves. Is that operated by a handlebar lever, or does it actuate from the action of the kickstart?

If from the kickstart, I wonder whether it's properly adjusted? Might be the cause of your difficulties.

There’s a lever on the handlebars Paul, when I have started it I’ve used it and it appears to do its job. I’ve spoken to a local bike shop and it is due to go in for a health check (y)

Does it have a sump guard missing ?
Thought they had a Honda tin one, 125/185/250 from that era had them

Motorrad Konnection May be interested in a trade purchase buy

Yes, if it's allowing you to ease the engine over its compression stroke, it is indeed working.

I feel your pain, getting my XT600 started is a complete pain!!

I love mine. I've owned it for 30 years now.
Mine is almost original but unrestored.
It has the bashplate.
The decompressor operated from the kickstart as well. If set properly,
push the kickstart down with your foot until it goes over the compression.
Let it back up and a smooth but hefty kick does the job.
Choke position is a little critical.

That’s lovely

Nice bike 👍🏻I had a street legal XR500 when I lived in Riyadh many years ago, lots of fun riding it out in the desert 😁
