Although the NMC general advice brings together a range of information and links which have been developed in partnership with the UK Government, it does not carry the status of official Government guidance.

It is important to note that the situation on the border is subject to change.

It also remains the responsibility of all travellers/tourists to read and understand the most up to date guidance available on gov.uk, ec.europa.eu and also guidance from ferry operators.

Though I doubt if the chimp in the ferry operator’s call centre will know too much about bikers’ rights when it comes to van movements. They will though be great experts on nail polishing and hair extensions in Dover.

I'm driving my van to Greece for a microlight flying trip at the end of September and if there's room in my van was thinking of taking my Honda Grom with me.

Previously I know the French were being difficult about those taking bikes in vans but other countries ie Spain were OK with it provided the bike was in your name and you had the V5 with you. I took my my van on the ferry to Spain with my Grom in the back and this is what happened.

Please will anyone who has had recent experience of taking a bike in the back of a van through the tunnel to France let me know if there was any trouble in doing this?

Of course, it also assumes that the local authorities (whether in the UK or overseas) even request to look into the van at all. Lots of vans go in and out, without ever being looked into.

When I took my van to Spain a few years ago and had my Grom in the back I was pulled in checked over as soon as I got off the ferry. They were only interested in the Grom's V5 and that the name matched my passport.
