Binding front brake

Hi folks,

At the weekend I replaced my front brake pads and a fork seal, the only problem I had was one of the pistons in the right hand caliper, didn't want to go back in, however I managed to push her back with a bit of elbow grease. I cleaned the calipers with WD and dried them afterwards. Now, for some reason the front brake, on the right hand side I would say, is binding, making the old girl fell heavier than she really is. Any ideas how I can sought this out please?

Also, I have an annoying squeak/rattle coming from somewhere, I have checked all I can, the obvious bits, but cannot find the bugger. It only squeaks whilst on the move, not with the engine running at standstill etc, sounds like a dry bolt or something, dont think there are bleed nipples anywhere are there?

hello mate,

technically you shouldnt use wd40 on the brake pistons, itll make the rubber seals perish. Get some red rubber grease on the pistons and itll improve them. You can use some fine wet n dry to very gently polish up pistons. Clean out the seals with brake cleaner and a cotton wool bud & a pick and itll be much better. Put a little dab of copper slip on the back of the pads to stop brakes sqealing.

Sqeaky noise could be anything.. you would need to be a bit more specific mate.

Clean the pistons using a half knackered scotchbrite washing up sponge thingy and brake fluid, no need for anything fiercer, lubricate piston with red rubber grease or brake fluid, copaslip the piston faces where they touch the pads clean everything thoroughly.

Regardin yer squeak
if yer on a GS 1100 or 1150
look at the rear rack , its sprung mounted, and if not lubed up they squeak.

i had this bloody squeak for about a month

Fixed the squeak

I think I have found the squeak that appeared on my bike........


This evening I started stripping her down, when I started to move the tank I found the squeak. What had happened was whilst re-assembling her a few weeks ago my mate reconnected the battery. What he has done is connect the earth lead to the outer edge of the battery terminal, which in turn has been rubbing on the inside edge of the tank.
All Ive done is re position the earth lead on the inner most side of the terminal, no the tank doesnt touch the terminal.

If on the commute tomorrow morning I am not accompanied by "stewart little", then we have a cure, and I will be very very happy.
