Sold it to Scotland who broke it down for spares.

Seriously, there are plans for groups in South Wales at the moment. Go to the NABB site and make contact.

Suffolk now running, Norfolk in September, Cambridgeshire next year. Further afield, I'm not sure.

One reservation - we are not putting motorbike couriers out of business by doing this are we?

You are aving a larf ....aren't you? Most likely they'll be the ones needed the blood transfusion.

A few years ago SWMBO was in intensive care waiting on a bone marrow transplant (which is now done by way of a stem cell transfusion). When you are sitting and waiting for that bag of life to arrive you'll fully appreciate just how many people are involved in getting it to where it needs to be. SWMBO's transfusion came all the way from a donor in Germany by car, plane and I believe even a helicopter for part of the journey. :bow

Good reply - but the question still has to be answered.

SERV in the Herts & Beds area replaces taxis, not bike couriers. The number of runs we do would not support a taxi business, or even a freelance driver, so the answer to your question is no, we are not putting anyone out of business.

Same all over. Locally, UPS are contracted too.

You can't imagine how much it costs to buy a taxi transfer from Blackheath to Norwich.

We reckon that for every £1 spent on Bloodbikes, the NHS saves £10.

What an interesting thread

I couldn't fit this voluntary work in with my job. However, I've certainly found that plenty of people I've chatted with after a donor session are those that have received a transfusion or had a loved one receive a lifesaving transfusion.

SERV Wessex

For anyone that is interested, SERV Wessex has now been running for a year, it was formed by merging Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire.

www.servwessex.org.uk

More hospitals in the region are signing up and taking advantage of this vital money saving charity.

Donations and volunteers are always welcome.

Thanks for reading.

I asked my insurers about my insurance cover should I volunteer to ride for SERV, only to be told I would need business cover at a greatly increased premium. The out of pocket expenses seem quite a bit, hence my idea to become a SERV rider is back on hold for the moment whilst I reconsider.

I'd like to give something back to biking, could find the time to do weekend riding cover and already travel/work at most South coast hospitals as a field service engineer so know the routes well but it seems more than moderately expensive when the insurance is factored in.

Do your IAM and then insure with Adelaide IAM Surety, class one business use is included in the price.

Insurance

BMW insurance certainly cover me at no additional charge

Delboy - as a SERV rider myself, I can confirm that this is absolute b...cks. My regular insurance (through Bennett) covers SERV duties just fine. They did try saying the word "business" to me, but I responded with the word "charity" - which shut them up.

I'm on step 1 at the moment, joined the IAM and now waiting to be allocated an observer. The free assessed ride I did a few weekends ago was good, shouldn't be too long before I can apply to take the test.

As for step 2, I shall speak again to my insurers once I have the IAM pass and mention 'charity' to them and see what they say.

The really difficult bit will be fitting in SERV cover duties around my usually hectic work/travel schedule, but I can hopefully arrange something with my employers regarding work call-out rosters etc.

best of luck its worth it in the long run:thumb2

SERV

Given a number of the arsey comments at this thread (http://www.essexbikers.co.uk/forum/...oking-for-more-members-please-can-anyone-help), what precisely is SERV and NABB seeking to offer?

On reviewing the above thread, a) it reinforces the view that their are some complete twats in Essex - you really have to live there to fully appreciate the level of numptyness that exists - but at the same time, b) leaves me wondering as above.

I'm struggling with the fuckwits who think voluntary charity workers take the jobs from paid employees. No offence intended (but probably creating same), that does tend to typify public sector employee mentality. Sorry to tar with an extremely broad brush... it's a wonder the RNLI aren't accused of taking jobs off people that would otherwise be paid to do them - FFS!

Sorry, the above rant belongs in a different section.

If money was no object, no doubt all these voluntary services would be paid for as handsomely by the various Trusts as their various CEO pay cheques and severence deals. However, if, as is alluded to, it frees-up NHS &/or Ambulance personnel to get on with specialist emergency services whilst at the same time avoiding Primary Health Care & NHS Trusts spending cash on mini-cab firms / couriers for the transportation of items at one location which are needed promptly somewhere else, it does seem like a good idea and very public-spirited of the people that give their time.

I may have answered my own question but (throwing caution to the wind and ignoring the sage advice of being careful what you wish for) would welcome the views of others.

You must own a big hammer, 'cos you just hit the nail on the head.

NHS is struggling enough to make ends meet. I want to do it as a way of saying thanks to all the medical teams and those that work in support of them in some way, and maybe free up much needed cash and resources to provide care rather than taxi cabs.

If someone has a problem with that, tough shit.
