Blown bulb?

Get some contact cleaner or wd40 on those electrical contacts. Having to tap bulbs to work is normally a sign of water ingress and corrosion. Replacing the bulb might work as this will disrupt rust... but it will stop working again if you do not fix the root of the problem. Rust comes back pretty quickly. Give it a good clean and then wrap the area with tape. Good luck and enjoy the process... you can do it.

Thanks. I'm planning on taking my time and adding some vaseline to the rubber manifolds/seals.

Thanks Younger06, I'll investigate!!!!

Don't forget to add the 20% code (its on the home page) when you are checking out.

The Phillips twin pack for €16 (less 20%) would be the ones I'd go for.

Thought about them but went for the OSRAM Night Breaker Unlimited H3

Also, my links are not working now!!!

It's a great site, I have been getting my bulbs from them for donkeys years.

Well, in the end it turned out to be a broken wire. Replaced all spade connectorsand ran new wire. All sorted.

Your wiring looks a bit iffy. Whatever the fault is I'd remove, clean and lubricate with contact grease every individual connector.

When you tap a bulb thats not working and it then comes on it means the filament is broken. By taping it the broken ends make contact and "weld" themselves together again as long as there is current flowing. Switch off the lights and current stops, filament ends separate again until you tap the bulb while the lights are on

Interesting thanks!

You've not actually heard of Smelly's prowess with spanners and mechanical things then?

It's second to none. None being the operative word! In fairness, I managed to rewire the broken cable without too much fuss. My problem is I'm quite likely to use a bread knife where a scalpel is needed. Truth be told I prefer to not touch things any more. Less heartbreak for everyone.
