Honestly what a great wheeze. Of course they are quite right to do it that way. I remember the static wheel balancer we had in a back room because people expected to see a spinning wheel. I remember getting that little bubble exactly in the centre. The tracking tool was a piece of string. Those were the days. JJH

In fairness to the op, the service I get with my fitter is appreciated and makes me return to them so its win win.

Same here. I've used Protyre in Enfield for the past 20 years and the guy always removes the residue - uses a plastic scraper and then wipes them with a solvent of some sort to remove the last remnants.
He also gives the wheel a quick clean - sprays it with a cleaning solution and wipes it away.
Yup, been there and done that on a Tiger 1050. Except I used neat acetone...If it’s a 1200/1250 with alloy wheels be careful if you do clean it off, I managed to remove the paint from mine with a very gentle solvent (nail varnish remover) which is usually safe on pretty much anything and too much elbow grease

In Halfords earlier and i see turtle wax do a specific product just for this, £5 no dramas.

I dont know if dealers do or don't remove the old sticky pads.
I like many other change my own tyres.
I use panel wipe to clean the old glue from the pads off the wheels.

Had two tyre's fitted to loose wheels yesterday at pidcocks bmw & no they didn't remove the sticky pads which didn't bother me at all as it's easy enough to remove your self.
I'm more bothered about scratches which there was none.

It all depends on what you are paying for.
Most people go for the cheapest option - i.e. they ring a dealer and ask what does it cost to replace a tyre. I bet not once does that person ask - “what does this involve”.

maybe the more expensive quote would have included - removing all existing weights etc.
However the person always expects everything to be included -
End of the day - with any business - time has to be costed and you probably got what you paid for

I think Service depts for nearly all brands of bike or cars are now offering reduced levels of 'service' than pre-pandemic.
ie. Valeting is now nearly non-existent for all marques from budget to luxury, I keep hearing -'very sorry it's the valeting guys day off today'.
Personally I'm not bothered in the slightest as long as I've not been charged on the invoice - but I'd rather they simply said 'sorry we don't do valeting any more'.
In one car dealers after they apologised (as above) they offered the guy picking up his car, a token to do it himself - that really is taking the piss!
Get the feeling that they've all cut back on labour and aren't keen to recruit more staff or can't get them.
I'm sure there are exceptions but that's my experience.
