My attitude is suffering terribly with the latest steaming crock of parts wait times from BMW Motorrad here in Mexico. I suspect the same is going to be happening in the 1st world soon enough.
I've now been waiting 10 weeks for a cam chain tensioner. This is the same part that is used on the F800 and the F650 models. I was told two weeks ago that it was no longer available. That is to say, BMW was telling me that part for a bike still being sold off the dealer's showroom floor was no longer available and they had no new supplier for this part, it was discontinued. This was after waiting 7 weeks for the part and if I hadn't called the dealer, I would still be waiting for a part that would never arrive. Motorrad customer service from corporate and some dealers is pathetic. Now, when I contacted the corporate offices of Motorrad I was told that, lo and behold, yes, the part was discontinued which they informed me of after their one day investigation. When I mentioned they were committing what amounted to criminal fraud under Mexican law (a sometimes oxymoron but it worked in this case) in selling a brand new vehicle and knowingly not being able to support it, I received a phone call from the dealer that the part was now being redesigned and the new cam chain tensioner assembly would soon be available and they would deliver it to me. I am still waiting and now think it is nonsense from Motorrad or they are simply buying time.
Now, some people on here have heard about that situation, but here is a brand new one.
I've been informed there is at least a 6 week wait for fork bushings for the F650 twin.
Fork bushings. Not some special part, but a normal wear and tear item, an item that falls in the category of "usual replacement", and not something special. Fork bushings, like seals, do wear and will fail.
Why in this day and age, if the fork bushings are available from the factory in Germany, should I have to wait 6 weeks for the parts? Back in 1992 I could order parts by fax from England for my 71 Norton Commando and have them in my hands in 5 days. That was 19 years ago and for a bike that was 21 years old at the time. I now need common parts for a bike manufactured mid-year 2009, is still being sold with only cosmetic and paint changes, and I need to wait 6 weeks.
Yes, I can order the parts from the USA if they are available. I will then have to pay shipping and customs fees at my expense, in short, a punishment from Motorrad for living in a country where they don't bother having parts backup.
I will follow this up with another call to Motorrad Mexico explaining again as a consumer I am not being treated fairly and see what they say this time. I also plan on getting a time line for that new cam chain tensioner that is supposedly going to be sent.
Would I buy another BMW? LOL!
I also plan on drafting a letter in Spanish to the editor of the national BMW magazine here (award winning publication no less ho,ho) and see if they will publish it. I highly doubt it. I've never seen them publish a negative comment about a BMW product or service yet.
There, now I feel a little better...
And BMW thinks the F800 and F650 are round the world bikes in the great GS tradition? With this kind of support? LOL!
