BMW parts wait times outside the 1st world

My attitude is suffering terribly with the latest steaming crock of parts wait times from BMW Motorrad here in Mexico. I suspect the same is going to be happening in the 1st world soon enough.
I've now been waiting 10 weeks for a cam chain tensioner. This is the same part that is used on the F800 and the F650 models. I was told two weeks ago that it was no longer available. That is to say, BMW was telling me that part for a bike still being sold off the dealer's showroom floor was no longer available and they had no new supplier for this part, it was discontinued. This was after waiting 7 weeks for the part and if I hadn't called the dealer, I would still be waiting for a part that would never arrive. Motorrad customer service from corporate and some dealers is pathetic. Now, when I contacted the corporate offices of Motorrad I was told that, lo and behold, yes, the part was discontinued which they informed me of after their one day investigation. When I mentioned they were committing what amounted to criminal fraud under Mexican law (a sometimes oxymoron but it worked in this case) in selling a brand new vehicle and knowingly not being able to support it, I received a phone call from the dealer that the part was now being redesigned and the new cam chain tensioner assembly would soon be available and they would deliver it to me. I am still waiting and now think it is nonsense from Motorrad or they are simply buying time.

Now, some people on here have heard about that situation, but here is a brand new one.

I've been informed there is at least a 6 week wait for fork bushings for the F650 twin.
Fork bushings. Not some special part, but a normal wear and tear item, an item that falls in the category of "usual replacement", and not something special. Fork bushings, like seals, do wear and will fail.

Why in this day and age, if the fork bushings are available from the factory in Germany, should I have to wait 6 weeks for the parts? Back in 1992 I could order parts by fax from England for my 71 Norton Commando and have them in my hands in 5 days. That was 19 years ago and for a bike that was 21 years old at the time. I now need common parts for a bike manufactured mid-year 2009, is still being sold with only cosmetic and paint changes, and I need to wait 6 weeks.

Yes, I can order the parts from the USA if they are available. I will then have to pay shipping and customs fees at my expense, in short, a punishment from Motorrad for living in a country where they don't bother having parts backup.

I will follow this up with another call to Motorrad Mexico explaining again as a consumer I am not being treated fairly and see what they say this time. I also plan on getting a time line for that new cam chain tensioner that is supposedly going to be sent.

Would I buy another BMW? LOL!
I also plan on drafting a letter in Spanish to the editor of the national BMW magazine here (award winning publication no less ho,ho) and see if they will publish it. I highly doubt it. I've never seen them publish a negative comment about a BMW product or service yet.

There, now I feel a little better...

And BMW thinks the F800 and F650 are round the world bikes in the great GS tradition? With this kind of support? LOL!

And breathe ............

Poor you Mike, that is shit service.
As in another post, customer service is manned by people who know nothing about bikes, and some that have a little knowledge. Its not just BMW either, very frustrating. Do you want to borrow my shotgun? :D

Thanks for the offer LOL!
I get a little envious when I hear of actual Motorrad dealers who give a loaner bike to customers...for starters.
I have a sneaking suspicion that something is afoot with consolidation of BMW parts supplies, changes of suppliers, etc...
I still have yet to hear a good reason why David Robb left.

Who the fuck is Lol?

Why isn't he helping you?

For example, Lol could be in practically any Mexican town right now, asking about and finding some parts for you.....or even having them made up, it's that kind of place.

Unfortunately, you and your ineffectual mate Lol are in a 2nd world country but acting with 1st world attitudes......dealing with BMW in Munchen and talking about fraud and rights and inefficiency :blast

Get local........ask any passing biker where the nearest bike shop is and hang around.......big smiles and a handshake (with your wits about you still) and I bet you or your mate LOL will be able to find some fork bushings to fit or have some machined down to size.

Good luck to you and Lol......but get real, both of you, please!! :blast

Makes you realise how lucky we are here. Up until BMW moved their warehouse, I could phone Vines at 10am for parts, and if they didn't have them there in stock, they would arrive from BMW that same afternoon.:thumb Now we have to put up with next day deliveries!:blast:D:D

I take it the above kind and generous response from ur maun Fanum is an attempt at humor.
Thanks for your kind thoughts and wonderful suggestions. I could be a complete ingrate but that is not in my nature. No, sir!
I'm a nice guy! In fact, I can get you, Fanum, a brand new, still in the box, Moto Islo engine if you want one, so don't accuse me of not looking for things, please. LOL!

So, Fanum, do you want the Moto Islo engine? It's all shiny and brand new and if you fold it up in the shape of a cone you can...LOL!

Thanks Nutty, seriously, I do envy people who live near a dealer that has things like a loaner bike, for example. You've still got it good.

MikeMike.......yes, it was meant to be vaguely amusing but based around an important principle which I felt you were missing by a mile.

I've never been to Mexico, so perhaps my tongue in cheek comment is not as viable as I hope it is.......however, having a lot of experience in similar countries, I do know that the approach of sitting back and moaning about dealers back in Europe is probably not the fastest or cheapest way out of your dilemma.

As for LOL.......:blast

Yes, but I needed to...vent.:rob

So, the Moto Islo motor goes to someone else, right? LOL!

Venting is good for you :beerjug:

PS get rid of your mate Lol...you've called for him several times and he still hasn't appeared. :blast

Good luck out there, and ENJOY the breakdown as part of the experience :comfort
