I'd say £100 in your sky rocket was a good result, you cheeky begger :)

I have reason to agree with everything Brian wrote.

I'd take the £100 - it may well be worth more than an extended warranty. Good result. :)

Extended guarantees

Whatever you buy these days you are invariably offered an extended guarantee - at a price. I look around my home -NO EXTENDED GUARANTEES on anything. The TV is 13 years old -(I wish it would go wrong and I would have an excuse to buy one of these new ones!) The Video recorder is the same age and is now in a cupboard having been superseded! The 'fridge was built in to the house before I bought the house 10 years ago. My Ford Focus is a 2000 model and sits in the garage most of the time. The telephone/answering machine is 14 years old - just put in a drawer because it is now outdated. I have a collection of cameras - all working, but never used now...........and so on and on. If I had taken out extra guarntees on all these items imagine how much I would be out of pocket.

I see your point exactly Brian..........no extended Warranties on any household goods or our car either.

Just wish I had the more faith in the reliability of GS's............too many stories of broken gearboxes and final drives for my liking. No idea what the odds are of me having one of the bad ones but I guess another symptom of my current situation is that I don't feel I'm one of the luckiest people around!

Too much time to dwell on these sort of things and none of the enjoyable stuff like riding to distract me :(

Talking of odds or more acurately 'statistics' - I wonder......has anyone ever run any kind of survey to see if there are any underlying factors that would make sense of the apparently random problems?
For instance, taking final drive faults as an example:
# What's the difference between the few bikes affected and all those not?
# Do BMW have more than one supplier for the same part or are parts/bikes assembled in different places?
# Is there a specific range of chasis numbers that exhibit particular faults?
....and so on.

Maybe we (whomever might want to be involved/have suggestions) should design a survey and this could be sent out via a 'global' email from the forum to all members.........or I could publish it as an online 'form' on a webpage.
Be interested what people think on that.........

"Too much time to dwell on these sort of things and none of the enjoyable stuff like riding to distract me " .............Yes, that's the real problem Andy. Find another topic to distract you and listen to your phsiotherapist!

We affectionately refer to them as physioterrorists :)

I do listen to them............I like watching as well :D

I'd be interested to hear why you think that Paul.........thanks.

Nothing very profound. I just felt that a definite £100 would be better than an unused warranty. And the odds are probably on not needing the warranty.

Of course if you did need it, it would not be worth it. :) (though BM are often quite good on "goodwill" gestures).

Good result

Andy

I think it`s a fair result and given they have offered you £100 already, it`s pretty fair to assume they will help again in the future. Your approach to this shows that most people (including B*W) will try help when asked. As already pointed out, if they were to publicise this approach, all hell would break loose.

I really wouldn`t bother with the extended warranty and rely on the goodwill shown already. I`d spend the £100 on bling and enjoy riding the GS again whilst avoiding big trucks:augie

Oi, by the way, my girlfriend is a "physioterrorist" and routinely puts me through the pain barrier.......and I love it::eek: D :D :D

Yeah I agree SB, having given it more thought I've decided just to leave as is and trust to luck..........I'd like the comfort of having the extended BMW warranty but the £600 price tag is just rediculous.

You're a luck guy having a physio for a GF :thumb

BMW

To us BMW is the firm that manufactures the bikes that we ride and becuause we are faithful (some of us ) to them ,we feel they should deal fairly with us. It seems that some of us forget that the company is there to make money - we may consider that customer relations are all important - I say that is up to the individual dealer.
To put everything into perspective , the company is very profitable (pre-tax earnings last year 5.5 billion dollars) and is one of the companies which will get Germany out of the decline that has beset their country ( and others in the EU.)
They make cars, from Rolls Royces to Minis (UK produced) and they also produce motorbikes - over 100,000 p.a. now. For each bike they produce about 1,000 cars;(in fact about 2;5 Minis for each bike!) In a long article in Time magazine about the company there was no mention of 'bikes!
It is reassuring to know that the resources are there - and worth emphasing the profits when in the showrooms.

I know you have all been slagging off BMW warranty and service but for once some good news.

My 1200gs is 2years and 4months old (so when Alan Jefferies said that I had a couple of problems on my 18k service I nearly died.

The couple of problems being an leak between the engine and gear box and the rear rebound damper not working and needing replacing-to me these would be £450 plus-not good hey-ouch.

They then proceeded to tell me that they would try to claim under warranty. After a week they came back to me with good news-oil leak will be covered by BMW and the materials for the damper FOC so all I have to pay £70.00 for the labour fitting the damper.

Finally, again BMW/Alan Jefferies come up trumps and cannot be faulted.

Hi G2......glad you've had a good experience.

I for one am not slagging off BMW Warranty, in fact I'm not sure many people would - there have been a number of people who have posted about good experiemces like you've had. From what's been said before, having a good Dealer on side helps a lot.

Now, where the slagging off might be justified is the number of issues that so many people experience with the 1200!
