Hi , advice needed.

My 2010 GSA warranty has come to an end, BMW two years and dealers extended year. Question is, is it worth spending just over £300 for the extended warranty for another year ?

What do you think ? Experience ?

Cheers

SS

I extended mine, so far it has paid for new ECU, new rear shock and a few other bits and bobs, of course it also extends European recovery, so IMHO it has been well worth it.

Yes there are cheaper products out there but it kinda of keeps things in house and if on good terms with your dealer you will probably gain more than you loose.

My new rear shock was covered out of warranty by my rights under the Sale of Goods Act. Completey free and no fuss from the dealer (I didn't even have to ask).

On the flip side, my extended warranty did not cover me for wear and tear when my clutch went on a different bike that had an extended warranty and 30k miles.

So at the moment, from my experience, I'm left wondering where the hole is that the extended warranty fills?

As for BMW recovery - it's not like a man in a BMW uniform turns up and fixes your bike (maybe this happens sometimes but I guess rarely and never to me). The times I've used it someone who knows nothing about BMWs shows up and karts the bike off. The AA can do that and that's a free bolt on to my car breakdown recovery.

No !

Purchased this for years 3,4 & 5 on my 2007 GSA and never used it.

Only good point was when I sold it the purchaser had a bit of peace of mind

depends whether it breaks or not :D

like the poster above, i paid out for 3 years warranty and never claimed. never worried about the bike either though, and the recovery is good, at least it looks good. i never needed it.

it's not just £300 a year though. you need to get it serviced at a bmw franchise, which is probably another £300 pa. personally, i find taking it to a dealer something of an inconvenience when i could do it myself.

i have the same decision to make in a couple of months when my bike is 2 years old. dunno what i'm going to do yet :eek

Good points and food for thought there Cooky :thumb

My own experience- I added an additional year on my '09 after the two years was up. (-£310.00) There was an electrical problem which Park Lane took an age to sort. Covered on Warranty but I never got managed to get a final invoice to show the work which was a little frustrating. I did also get a loan bike FOC for a week.

Never bothered to renew last March. Put into my budget account (+£300)
Added 23k on last year.
1 Speed Sensor went kaput, replaced at dealer. Rocker cover seal (-£100)
March: Added again to my budget account (+£300)
Just now needed new FD bearing @ 43k
(-£300) Now, would the warranty have covered that?

So anyway I still have a balance of +£200 in the kitty for anything additional that may be needed this year. Not at all unhappy considering miles done last year and general abuse the ol' tractor took :)

Had I had it over again I probably wouldn't have bothered with the warranty and banked a budget amount- I actually use Steve @ Motoscot now and I'm pretty confident he would have solved the electrical problem.

Also with the newer model coming out I think there will be more used parts etc coming along thus making things a bit more managable.

Also factor in the effect on bike resale value if you dont have BMW servicing. If its more than 5 years old with a few miles under the wheels, the difference might not be much. But something 3 years old to be kept another 2 years might lose a few hundred off the bike's resale value. But you paid that anyway in higher service costs. Yer pays yer money etc.

In the end looking after the bike and having it properly serviced (on time or on miles) is the biggest insurance, then its down to how risk averse we are.

Yes it is true, it's part of the terms of bmw extended warranty - which is deemed fine as its a seperate contract that you enter in to with its own terms.

Fair enough :thumb

i think that's a good point. you would probably get more money for a newish bike with FMSH so that does narrow the gap a bit.

i dont think it would make any difference to the residual value. I had extended warranty on my 2006 and the buyer never even looked at the service history let alone worry about extended warranties - remember a lot of punters don't spend their lives fretting about break downs and have probably never even looked at this website.

I haven't bothered on my 2010 and have now saved over £700 without a single thing go wrong. More items than you think aren't covered in any case - clutch, brakes, battery, shocks, etc ,etc ,etc

My warranty ran out last month and I have not extended it,I have put the money in a isa. Time will tell if I come out on top or not,as has been mentioned this also means I am not tied in to dealer servicing although I may well continue with that as it builds up goodwill if something should happen.

I didn't on my 1150 RT and when the ABS pump I wished I had. So far I have on my 1200GS and I have had my money back including new shock and two replacement fuel gauges. I don't buy warranties usually but I will renew again for the bike.

I got a years warranty on my 2010 Twin Cam,and had i paid for it, it would already have covered the cost when my Alternator siezed and the bike had to be recovered to the dealer 160 miles away !! So methinks i will extend it when the time comes. Saving up just now for a LC GS sometime down the line so it will be dealer serviced and hopefully a bit of "goodwill" will have built up :D :blagblah

Took it out last Sept...rear shocker just gone this week, new one on order :thumb2

It all depends on how risk averse you are and if you're prepared to put in a bit of graft on your bike. I never bothered with my '08 so now I have had 3 years without a warranty saving about £1,000. I also do my own servicing work, so minus service items I reckon that has saved me a further £1,000 easily. I have had to replace my ESA shocks for Wilburs which cost £1,300 but I don't think these would have been covered by a warranty anyway from what I gather reading similar posts on the subject. I put the money saved each time into a cash ISA for the "next bike" fund.

I suppose it depends on how much faith you have in your bike.
It seems to me that BMW don't have much faith in their bikes, if the extended warrant costs are anything to go by.
I think BMW went through a poor quality patch over the last few years, but I think they have had to improve things of late.
My twin cam 1200R finishes it's warranty this month, but I'm buggered if I'm going to hand over £300+ for another year of "peace of mind"!
I don't think it'll break, but if it does, I'll fix it.
