BMW Warranty

It seems to me that BMW don't have much faith in their bikes, if the extended warrant costs are anything to go by.

£300 for 2 years on my octavia.

i've had a new AC compressor @ £1200 and a wiper motor as well, so that's looking like a bargain :D

I bought an 08 ADV from BMW as a used apporoved and it came with a years warranty.

My rear ESA shock started to leak and it was replaced without any fuss under warranty.

Several posters have said shocks are not covered but I can testify that they are!

Cost of rear ESA shock = £1034 plus vat plus fitting

Thats about 2 years worth of warranty and servicing so I guess I'm quids in already so I will probably extend again in Oct.

On my 11 plate twin cam the rear shock only lasted 700 miles unfortunately losing its damping as I came off the ferry at Zeebrugge, it was replaced under warranty , at 4500 miles the front wheel went out of true, didn't bother claiming , instead I put alloys on it and got Devon Wheel company to rebuild the original.
I have a tour this summer just after the two year warrany expires and a 5000 mile trip next June so I will be extending the warranty. If I wasn't going away and staying in the UK I wouldn't be bothering and saving money by doing the servicing myself.

Yes and No.

Yes - I've ridden it like I stole it for the last 5.5yrs. Been fully covered on all Euro tours without a concern.

No - I'm probably down on the deal in terms of total price of warranty paid and repairs / recoveries made by BMW.

Will I do it again - Yes. Can you get a similar service from other brands - No (as far as I'm aware)

My view is that if the bike had a a final drive/gearbox failure in this country no problem, s/hand parts or a rebuilt box by Scriminger and sort it out at home.
Stuck in the Alps with no tools and problems with getting s/hand bits and I would be looking at a very large bill and a spoilt holiday.

That's what breakdown covers for :nenau

I've been quoted £364 for my (soon to be) 2 year old 12 RT SE.

Been advised you can no longer buy through the dealer you have to buy direct from BMW, so there goes the 'build up a relationship' bit.

I'll still do it though.

I'm hopeless with a screwdriver/spanner & wouldn't have a clue how to repair even the most minor of problems.

£1 a day guarantees me worry free motorcycling & I'm happy to pay that. I even get one day free!

I think the 'relationship building' is more to do with servicing rather than buying the warranty through them.

As somebody already suggested I dont extend the warranty but continue to have the basic services done at my dealer. If something goes bang I'll ask nicely for some goodwill and see what they say - as I know them well and the mileage isnt obscene.

If you service at an independant or do it yourself you can forget any goodwill out of warranty.

i was told yesterday of an ABS repair on a 12RT that was c.£3K

The ABS went on my last 12 RT. I was quoted £1,200 + labour + VAT.

The dealer rang BMW who stumped up in full even though the bike was 4 years old, no warranty and had been bought privately.

:thumby:

it's not just £300 a year though. you need to get it serviced at a bmw franchise, which is probably another £300 pa. personally, i find taking it to a dealer something of an inconvenience when i could do it myself.

£300 pa, I wish……
2010 bought secondhand 02/03/12 with 5500 miles
23/05/12 @ 11,785 miles £410
17/08/12 @ 18,299 miles £250
02/11/12 @ 23,839 miles £410
22/01/13 @ 30,053 miles £210
22/03/13 @ 35,652 miles £360

Approx £1,640 pa....

These costs are strictly servicing costs, I have removed tyres and cleaning/ACF50 costs so as not to frighten anyone.
Basically any motorcycle used in anger is going to be expensive.
I look at it as a life choice, and just get on it and ride, and yes I also have the extra cost of the warranty

Same quote here on 2011 GSA - £364.79 with £0 excess via BMW. I don't normally extend warranties but having had both front & rear shocks replaced recently and some ABS sensor, it feels like it could be a sensible investment, albeit a reluctant one.

do any other manufacturer's offer this and if so what sort of price and time period, or is it a BMW 'thing' as I guess maybe a good money spinner for them ?

You should only insure for things that you can't afford to pay for.
Good point but I concluded both from and rear shocks replaced in the past few weeks would cost many times more than the £364 warranty hence being tempted by a warranty. I called Warranty Direct and they quoted £350.75.

I'm not sure if that's true, Cookie? :nenau

It is true, its only when you have it initially with the bmw 3 year warranty that you can have it serviced else where, provided you use bmw parts.

I had my bike serviced by an independant place in wellingborough when i took out the extended warranty, and it invalidated the cover. extended cover and can only be serviced by bmw.

strange but true

I have had the warranty for the last two years and found an unexpected downside to it. The fuel tank sensor broke for the second tine in under 20,000 miles and I had to pay the £100 excess to get it fixed under the warranty. Lots of people appeared to be getting these fixed free outwith warranty as a good will gesture and I asked the dealer to try BMW for this to save me the excess. I was told there is no chance of a good will repair when you have the extended warranty so my repair cost me £100 while folk who had not bought the warranty got it repaired for free. I won't be renewing this year since I will hit the magic 30,000 miles when I would no longer get the suspension repaired. I will need to find a reliable breakdown recovery however and I will miss the peace of mind that I got with BMW assist when touring in Europe.
