Hi folks,

I have been told by my dealer that I am due some new software and it is booked in next week. For those who have had it done, does it make much difference? My gear shift is ok but not as slick as the demo I rode and I am hoping things do improve a little.

Only just over 2000 miles at the moment, though, and does seem to be getting better. Or I am just getting used to it!

Cheers,

Matt

I had my May 2015 GS done and the wife had her July 2015 R1200r done. We both found the gear assist much better afterwards.

In the interest of being fair, it wasn't bad before the update. It just feels a bit smoother afterwards.

Had my 8000mile RT done last week. And I have noticed a markef improvement. Especially on down shifts.

:rolleyes::rolleyes: dismayed, it an adventure bike not a trackday wepon, but I guess it must be needed on the Starbucks run

It is an RT, hence posted in the RT section, but I guess every bike is an adventure bike if you want it to be. :comfort

Also, once you have actually used the gear shift assist you may be converted. I was fairly cynical about it too until I had a go. Amusing on up-shifts but comes into its own on super smooth down-shifts when riding with a pillion.

Anyone know how recently this software update was released/became available? Trying to gauge if it's since my bike was in for its last service...

Around 18th July. That's when my wife's 600 mile service was and they said it had just come out. Bike was 3 weeks old at that time.

Works well on my GSA but occasionally when pressing on going from 3rd to 4th it will downshift instead sending to revs to the redline? Now it maybe me subconsciously rolling off the throttle and not being more positive with my gear change but it's also in for software update soon.

I wouldn't buy another bike without it though, it's so fun.

Thanks, sounds like I may have just missed it then given my bike was serviced on 3rd July.

On the way to the dealers I stopped at lights behind a Yamaha FJ1300, he selected 1st gear with a grunch that BMW would have been proud off
Quick shift not working on the up, 1 hour down load of new software, still not working, control box at back of the gear leaver fault, ie broken.
Back on the road first thing I notice was how much smoother the engine felt (have they altered the fueling codes).
Quick shift now working and a slight improvement

Hi Dennis,

Interesting you should mention the fuelling. Quite a few of the RT guys in the US are also reporting a change of how the engine feels after the update. I am intrigued as to how it will feel on Wednesday once my update has been done.

Ride safe,

Matt

That makes sense. When our bikes were done the dealer said it's a general update of most firmware, including engine and not just a quick shifter update. On the GS any customisation of the dashboard display is lost and it reverts back to factory settings.

Had my update today and rather impressed. The engine does feel a little smoother and the shift assist is slicker.

In addition, the assisted downshift works better into first gear and I can now change down with a wide open throttle. This means iI can now drop a gear without the clutch whilst overtaking if needs be. This never happened on my bike before but this may be old news to other folk.

Cheers

If this is a bigger update than just the gear shift assist improvements, any idea if the digital speedo has been enhanced to allow a mph/kmh option, which would be useful for trips to the continent??

I will check later. I was really disappointed that there was no way to change this, especially on a top of the range tourer.

It is definitely a wider update, though, as the display and several other bits seemed to reset to factory defaults.
