Boot grip on wet roads

There's a difference between boot rubber and tyre rubber .... on the Nürburgring courses you would walk part of the track, slippery to your boots but yet not to the tyres. Strange!

So been looking at the Daytona Roadstar Pro GTX boots.
I have now bought a pair in size 46.
My normal motorcycle boot size is 46, but reading Daytona's size chart there 46 is uk 11.5 where most are a size 11 for a 46.
I know i wear a bit thicker socks in the winter, so hopefully they will be ok.

So i'll keep my RST Pathfinders for spring and summer now.
I also have RST Frontier boots that i wear in the summer when riding in my armoured jeans on them hot days ( so one week a year lol ).

in many African countries to see folk wearing sandles made from old car tyres

It’s also quite common to see them wearing nothing at all on their feet. I see a new and very cost effective method to employ, when riding a motorcycle.

I needed to reproof a textile jacket, so hung it in a doorway above a tiled floor, and liberally sprayed it with nikwax silicon (silicone? never sure)

Holy crap, the floor below the jacket was indescribably slippery for ages afterwards, I think white spirit eventually fixed it. Lesson learnt!

I am reminded of seeing The Who at Charlton FC. It rained; Roger Daltry ran onto the stage, sliding quite a long way, to shout ‘The Who on ice!”. Happy days.

I dropped a bottle of Lenor Outdoorable (Northern Soldtice) fabric conditioner on the kitchen tiles last week. Wiped it up with a T-shirt destined for the wash, and 5 minutes later hit a skid pan.
Nice smell though.

According to the size guide on Sportsbike shop, 46 is a UK 11 and a USA 11.5

The Daytona branded sole does look good, and a bit tyre like.

We need a new thread on the world’s shoe sizes. This could include the length of tyre carcass required, to make an African gentleman a pair of sandals. Here is some inspiration:

The likes of Metzeller already make rubber soles, so I put my order in for a Karoo 3 bootie.
But you are right, footwear is the one thing that is a bastard to get right without trying on.
In a rush I ordered some Italian Oxford brogues off Amazon last year. Knowing they are a bit mean I went up a size, but still couldn't even get my foot in it.

I had my foot measured in Lockwoods last year, and was surprised I'm only a 11.5UK.
All my adult life I have bought 47 or 47.5 My Sidi X Power and Crossfires are a 48.
So 12, 12.5 or 13 in old money ... but never 11.5.

When wet worn crocs on a tile floor, lethal.

Conversely dry crocs on the dry tile are also pretty dangerous as they stick and trip you.

LIFT YOUR FEET GRANDAD🤣🤣

I have a pair of new Alterberg Roadrunner boots with vibram soles. Best boot grip I've ever experienced from any motorbike boot, wet or dry. Very confidence inspiring on a wet road when paddling the bike about for parking. Extraordinarily grippy things.

They certainly wear out faster than say a Vibram sole
Same with a lot of the leisure type outdoor shoes like Merrell and Meindl, really grippy but wear out faster.
So the question is what is the slippiest terrain, and what are the soles of choice?
And the answer is a rocky river bed, and the best waders come with felt soled boots.
They most certainly do. Three soles in less than two years on my Altberg walking boots.

I had 2 pairs of Defenders where the sole de-laminated and let water come in.
I believe the bike boots are better, but I gave up on the brand.
Shame as I fancied a pair of their tabbing boots, which were as close as I can find to the no longer available British Army Assault Boots.
Now that was a great, lightweight, none lined but waterproof boot with a great and silent sole.

I certainly won’t be replacing them with any more Altbergs. My chainsaw boots are Meindl and they have been great. I haven’t walked as long days miles wise as I have in my Altbergs but I have worn them for very long days in the forest. The new Haix chainsaw boots look good so I might have a look at their walking boot options too.

Have a pair of Meindl Dovre and the equivalent Zamberlan hunting boot.
Zamberlan comes in full grain leather and not split. Also optional wide fit, so edges it for me.
I have a 15 year old pair of black, high top Meindl military boots I ordered from Germany via a Meindl stockist.
Only wear them in known boggy Munro and Corbett walks now, but they are still going strong, and the quality top drawer.
I think they were £180 in 2008/9 which seemed expensive at the time, but now the £300 boot is here.

Reading RST website for the Pathfinder boot that i have, They says the following.

"The outsole has been designed specifically for touring - it features hard-wearing deep grooves perfect for the touring rider, offering good grip on the bike."

It should of said , "offering good grip on the bike, but don't put your foot down when its wet".
