i've bought it, but it's being delivered next week, what i want to ask is if i swap the standard silencer for something a bit more free flowing, will the ecu unit automatically compensate for it,

not too keen on the spoked wheel's, what alloy one's will fit, the bike is a 1999 model, thank's,
here's a pic of it,

Wheels - this thread is a good starting point. BTW - advertise your wheels as owners of earlier 1100's will love them as they're anodised and easier to keep clean. so - selling them should help recoup most of the cost of your new cast wheels.

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?15702-Cast-Wheel-Conversion-The-Facts!

changing the exhaust can be problematic. the studs that hold the down pipes are made of cheese. personally I wouldn't bother. and indeed i haven't. I love the fact the original is stainless and despite spending its entire life outside still looks good as new. Not sure what you mean by freer flowing. the usual reason for changing is saving weight or extra (irritating) noise. You'll be surprised how many owners have tried after market pipes and then swapped back.

This is good advice.. worth considering:

Yep,just ride it for 6 months, then see what you really need, and I bet it won't be much.

Top bike and welcome:beerjug:

Take a few months to try it

I'll bet you change feck all then! It'll grow on you exactly as it is, and you wont want to change anything about it. I have one just like it and some folk say they're the last of the 'Old' GS and are becoming collectable. Your wheels look to be in good condition, hold off on the alloys until you've had time to let the bike get under your skin.

The only mod I did was to disable the sidestand kill switch, as I wanted the bike to be able to run on the sidestand.

:blast

Bash plate looks like it's missing. Maybe not fitted after oil change? Worth asking about. Great bikes!

How do you know it's going to be road only? Presumably paid for it so should get it.

It would be strange to say the least to consider cast wheels if the intention is to take the bike off tarmac. Bikes are generally sold as seen - its minus the bash plate so he didn't pay for it. Ask about it by all means - but don't be surprised if its not with the bike.

What IS your point?

Sorry fella - but Im not going to play this game.

What I will do is wait for the OP to come back and if it happens that the bike is minus its bash plate and he decides he really must have one. Then He is more than welcome to have mine - gratis. just pay for the postage and its his. I have actually been waiting for somebody on this site to ask for one for years. because its been surplus to my requirements since my bike had its first service. I never go off tarmac.

Its both worthless and pointless - to me.

He only has to ask.

Many feel the spoked wheels are part of the image. As mentioned above it would be best to keep them for a while before going for alloy ones. I think the GS does look good with the alloy wheels but just a change for change sake. I prefer my spoked ones. It would be a bit like putting spoked wheels on a Fireblade. However it is your bike do what YOU want.

I have the 1150 and a number of people remove the cat and use a Y piece. This makes for reduction of weight (cat) and more free flowing though benifit can be subjective.
Resulting in a noisier exhaust.
As with any mod there are those fiercely pro or against. Again it your choice. Not sure if this mod is applicable to the 1100 but someone with more knowledge will no doubt enlighten you.

Exhaust Yes be wary of the header pipe bolts But if its a keeper then its worth it to change them They usually waste in behind the exhaust flange

If you want a nice enough pipe without the expense of Remus check out Dominator exhausts through E bay My pal bought one for his R1100RS He gave them 9 out of 10 for Build quality, Delivery time, Packing, ease of fitting etc etc Quite deep an noisy though BUT sure we all Know LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES :thumb

Its both worthless and pointless - to me

Although a bit more hassle to remove the 1100 ones (in my opinion) were much better at keeping crap off the front engine casing

Then again if its off and you wash it frequently nothing is going to sneak up on you Interesting View

Warmshed the 1100 uses a 2 into 1 header and then across under the gearbox

Y piece only suit 1150 models excluding the RT and RS from Memory (Unless you change the heads on an 1100GS for 1150 ones of course?)

motobiker, thank's for the wheel swap link, and the offer of the bash-plate, i wont be going offroad so i wont be needing it, never liked spoked wheel's since owning triumph's, panther's etc, all that cleaning, spoke's coming loose, etc, so it's cast wheel's for me every time, as for the exhaust, i like a bike to sound like a motorbike, so the standard silencer is definitely going, nobody has answered my original question yet though, "will the ECU automatically compensate for the leaning off of the mixture by using a free flowing silencer"?? my old K75's ECU did it automatically, but i think the GS has a different system, any info appreciated,

As Previously Stated

Ride it for 6 months then see what it really needs ;)

Have a look at the Font of Knowledge section regarding cat code plugs http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?28293-cat-code-plug-(AKA-STEPTOE-s-LINK)
_ in that thread relating to the 1100:-

"You cant use this as a datum for your own bike, but as I havnt seen anyone's dyno charts re this CCP mod and changes to the system in general. I thought Id pitch in with some data.

GS1100R.. Remus revolution (with legal insert silencer), stock filter and light brown CCP, no cat bike as standard (hence the CCP)

Ran brill, no surge or hunting, slightly over fuelling.

Installed K&N today.... ran awful, surged, hunted, popped and banged on overun

Remove CCP, Reset motronic, Then pulled some runs.. perfect.

F/A rich 14.2 at 2k, is a little lean at 3k, cock on at 5k, leans at top... nothing worse than 11.8:1

No chip, no pc...

77.1 bhp

Just for kicks took a look at stock pipe with stock filter & CCP in...... 76.6bhp.. ran perfect, same profile. just lower af peaks and troughs

Pipe and k&n on a GS.... runs awful with CCP in

One things for sure, Remus's are as restrictive as stock...

cheers Toaster"

I hope this helps. Dave.

I have no definitive answer for you But I fitted a Remus on my girlfriends 2000 R850R and it was thrashed around the Highland s for a week 2 up with us two and luggage, those who know me will know I am not a small guy and the bike coped fine and the exhaust never looked white even after long runs at the upper limit ;-)

So I guess what I am trying to say is that unless you are anal about it? The Bike copes with the changes but keeping an eye on the tail pipe after a long run will just confirm Yes or No that you need a chip in the ECU or a power commander

When i was considering an after market pipe many years ago - The Staintune was top of my list (the low one that allows a full size pannier) the description said 'no further modifications necessary'.

to be honest i doubt the ECU is clever enough to throw a wobbler if you fitted the usual 'Remus'. its very basic and in the case of the 1100 doesn't gather any information from the exhaust. Assuming your bike is a standard british one. certainly - my bike which was a german import and had a CAT - swapping it over to a UK spec original had no impact. The lambda wiring was unplugged and all was well.

... its been surplus to my requirements since my bike had its first service.

Ditto.

I do take my 1100 off-road occasionally, but I don't consider that the standard bash plate is a particularly well designed/effective piece of kit anyway. And it's inconvenient when it comes time to change the oil filter.

Tidy looking purchase BTW, OP. I'm sure you'll enjoy it once you have some miles under your belt :-)

You are propably right. Cast wheels can't stand offroad. Spoked wheels live and stand life in offroad riding.
So no idea to ride outside tarmac. What a pity with just a great bike like that.

I bought my 75th Anniversary 1100gs back in 98.....now got 80k miles on it, and has been an absolute legend !......During the first winter of ownership i tried to unleash as much performance as i could. I sourced a far bigger air intake from Australia coupled with a K&N air filter.....then a Laser PrO'Dor exhaust and a performance chip which came with the exhaust,,,,the end result was a very loud and sharp GS which emitted a lovely blue flame on trottle off and charged up to it's top speed shockingly fast !!...... After test riding every GS over the years.....it's only now with the 1200WC that performance has moved way on to another level !!.........Take it from me !!,,,,, 98/99 1100gses were some of BMWs most sorted bikes ever.... classics for sure !!
