Hi Guys,

Just bought my First BMW, a 2005 1200 GS,

Its going into the dealer for the fuel connector recall, and im thinking about having it serviced/checked over before my trip to france in a few weeks.

Normally i do all my own servicing, however felt as though it would be good to have it checked by someone else just in case. plus the bike has full service history which is the only real reason Im tempted to let the dealer do it.

A standard service and check is going to cost me £179, but to have the brake fluid changed will be another £142

Is it Hard and time consuming to do when you have ABS? The bikes only done 1500 miles since the last service, but that was 4 years ago and im just debating whether i do it myself, let the dealer do it. Or get a third party to do it.

Whole service from BMW, is £319, inc engine oil, final drive, check and brake fluid,

Jordan bikes in leeds want £229 for the same service.

Had lots of bills recently so just trying to be careful with the cash.

Thanks:thumb

Fluid Change

Regardless of milage since last service change the fluid, it's relatively straight forward and a search here will get you the instructions. If you are not sure, 140 beers tokens would IMHO be worth it.

I've just had a service including engine, gear box and FD oil plus brake fluid change for £195 at Astles near Grimsby (BMW dealer). This was reduced after I complained I thought £235 was too much. I think your dealer is having a laugh at that price. If its AJ's they do have a big show room to pay for.

The cost of a brake fluid change all depends on what year your bike is and if it has the servo/abs brakes, as the OP's 2005 has. Your model of bike maybe the later non servo bike, so be careful when comparing and spouting advice about things you may not be sure of.

you don't really state what the "standard" service includes .or how many miles the bike has covered.
but anyhow food for thought,
full service;
oil/filter change
gearbox oil.
f/d oil changed and condition check
plugs
air filter
rocker end float,valve clearance check/adjust
brake fluid change.
alt belt check
throttle bodies balanced.
brakes stripped cleaned and checked.
full visual inspection of non service items
wheels balanced
road test
diagnostic check, service indicator reset (n/a with 2005 bike)
£250 all in.
and the bike will be cleaned before ,during and after

I too have 2005 GS ABS and it is not a job I would attempt for the first time with only a short time before departure.

Have you priced from Barrie Robsons, York. Their mech, Martin did mine as an necessary addition to the clutch change, I did not get the bill broken down so can't help wrt cost.

However Mikeyboys service offer looks very tempting - I would not be over precious about keeping main dealer service history on a 9 year old bike

I live near leeds/sheffield

The bike has done 13500 miles, 1200 miles since last service 4 years ago

Rainbow in Rotherham has a good rep with some on here - haven't been myself but have always meant to give them a squizz.

Does the history show that the brake fluid has been changed in the past?.

I think with only 1200miles in the last 4 years I would change the engine, gearbox and fd fluids as a matter of course... and check the condition of the tyres - all things I am sure you can do yourself

Wasnt going to name names, but thats at rainbow,

Check, engine, GB, FD £180, + brake fluid bumps to £319

They were sound with me, and very nice. Im just debating what i want to do

Brake fluid goes off just as fast if not faster on a little used bike than one that's out every day. After 4 years it NEEDS doing. Its cheap compared to the cost of a new servo.

Do yourself a favor and order the JVB DVD for your bike and year of make:

http://www.jimvonbaden.com/

It explains and shows how all service tasks are done including the servo brake fluid change. I had never changed brake fluid before and with that instruction, I could do it, no problem. Have done it twice and will do again after this season.

hi jogo, thanks for that,

did you have to get the gs 911 ?? or what ever it is called, to change the fluid on it?

To be honest i've thought long and hard about this, I build cars and bikes in my spare time i can do all the work, its just the brake fluid which concerns me alittle as its usually a pig to do.

Thinking about doing the rest, and getting bmw to do a visual check and possibily do the fluid, im not sure yet, but at £120 ish for the fluid alone its not cheap

Matt

Hi Magicmat,
with the background you describe you are by far better suited for the work than I am (or was).
I dont have the gs911 and the dvd describes the work without using it.
On jim's homepage you find also free pictorials for many service tasks on your bike.
Even with your knowledge it might be worth a quick look for the specifics of your bike.

good luck
jogo
