Hmmm...

now before anyone says otherwise, i have changed the bulb to see if there is something awry when a filament goes kaput, but on switching the ignition to on, the brake light instantly lights up.

Am stumped as to what might be causing it. Brakes seem okay [i.e. haven't noticed any residual effect on riding] so am at total loss.

Anyone with an idea as to what might be causing it?

You haven't fallen off in the desert and knocked the hand guard against the front brake lever have you by any chance? :D:D:D:D

Sounds like a faulty or badly adjusted break light switch. You could try disconnecting the small connections to either the front break leaver or the back break switch to isolate the iffy one you will here a slight click from the offending items when the leaver/pedal is moved. I don't know if they are adjustable but someone on this site will. The light will go out if you disconnect the dodgy one.

My 1100 has had this problem on and off. It appears that the footbrake switch is a bit hit and miss in my case.

Holding the footbrake down and letting it pop up and hitting the stop appears to fix it. It's been happening for about 4 years now and is only a rare occurence.

The real answer is to either replace the switch, or, as in my case, pull it apart and clean then re-assemble, which I've done once.

You don't say what model bike you have, some of the later bikes with the EVO system are having this problem from what I see and hear.
