I've cleaned the calipers and pistons, cleaned the back of the pads and coppaslipped them, and cleaned the stainless steel spring thing that goes between the pins - but my front brakes still produce a loud, irritating squeal at low speed.

What else can I do? I don't want to change the pads, they've got thousands of miles left on them.

Make sure to holes in the disc are clean. On the 1200 there where some thin wafer washers, that you put between the disk and the hub to give a little play to the disc to stop the squeal.

if you have an 04 - 05 GS there was a warranty fix for front brake squeal

Little bit of copper grease works every time for me....A smear on the back of the pads stops the vibration which causes the squeeling.

squeek

make sure you put the stainless springy thing (anti vibe plate)in correctly sounds silly but worth check might not look any different?? but there is?

As blobbs said, there was a warranty fix on 04-05 model 1200gs. I had mine in for a week for oil leak warranty work and hopefully get the modification completed and the bike came back out with Hurst BMW telling me that understaffing not only failed to order and get washer modiication completed in the week but also failed to get the rear end of my 1200 engine cleaned after supposed oil seal replacement. I had to Gunk (very heavily) and power wash myself which I hope to those reading doesn't appear mediocre but has left me somewhat doubting if these seals were infact replaced. I will watch and wait with bated breath, and hope that I'm not disappointed, given that warranty period has now ended
