Had the brake failure light come on today(flashing) with the dreaded red triangle (04 with servo abs), it happened when I gave it full beans in fifth  the brakes still worked ok,thank God, I tested the abs by jumping on the rear and it locked up, so that part wasn't right. When I got where I was going I switched off, switched on and all was gone ( probably still in the history though). On the way home I tried to replicate the situation  but to no avail, brakes working as normal, any ideas chaps of is it a trip to the stealers to read the codes?

It did the same to me. It was my battery believe it or not. Did you have any extra' s running I. E spots gps ?

GPS was on, but no aux lights, I often get the yellow triangle with the battery on for a few seconds when I first start up, just thought the battery needed a charge, but to be honest the bike is used every day

Now you mention it, I've had to set the gps to "always on" because it seemed to lose its input from the bike and kept switching itself off, interesting :confused:

What effect does the battery have on the abs?

I had the same with my 1200GS, ABS Warning Light on and also the speedo would not read. Turned out that the battery was low. I understand that it's in some way down to the Canbus deactivating non essentail features if ti thinks that the battery reserves are being run down.

Based on that information, what battery would one recommend?

I have an Oddesy it's supposed to be a good one. Jonno at adventure bike warehouse had a similar issue with an Oddesy swapped it for another and it was fine. It seems to drop an amp and the canbus shuts off systems. Ask Jonno aka rudiemoto for battery options.

Well its done it again, high revs in high gear, exactly the same thing. So is it over charging then or discharging at high RPM? Is there a rectifier fitted to these bikes? Don't want to go forking out for a new battery if its something else.

Here is a thought, if its doing it at high rpm could the alternator belt be slipping? A bit concerned its happening at high RPM, is there a rectifier/regulator fitted to these machines?

yep

It could be the alternator belt slipping have you changed it? i changend mine at 48k. Ceck it to see if is worn...
Not sure where the rectifier is. It must have one....:blast

Im seem to remember on my old 05 GS that there was an insert to the riders manual warning that if the bike was used in a "training" role with lots of braking it could result in a low battery and affect the brakes. I think that this was an issue with the servo and not the ABS and resulted in the brakes going into "emergency mode" so should not affect post servo brake bikes.

The plot thickens, being an 04 with servo that would qualify it, but I wasnt doing a lot of braking, just revving hard after 10-20miles (the same thing this morning) as the alternator belt is old could it be slipping if a bit cold and stiff? Now going to get the battery tested.

Well Ive found it,are you ready for this, I have recently fitted a pair of wire wheels that came with discs and abs ring, it seems the abs spacing on my cast wheel ring are a different to the one on the spoke wheel I fitted :blast I thought it was rev/electronic related but it was speed related, cant say how fast officer ;) but I did manage to make it occur on the way home tonight :p1zzed:so I'll just have to swap the rings over and that should cure it.

no way
