Universal, it appears. there are several threads on the subject.

If im not mistaken there is no protective coating on them bare alloy never going to work

They're bare aluminium and they're oxidising, not corroding.

Mine are very poor, I have tried mechanical polishing with numerous compounds and no joy. This week I tried a Scott cloth followed by more polishing. I can't see else to do other than wrap them. There is no doubt in my mind the material, finish or both have changed.

Oxidising is a form of corrosion , the gradual degrading due to chemical action.

Agreed, though in the case of iron the oxidation process is called rusting and eventually destroys the material. Other materials like copper and aluminium seem to form an outer oxidised layer which protects the material from further damage. With aluminium this process can be done deliberately in which case it is called anodising.

I would have thought that aluminium will only retain a shiny non-oxidised appearance if it is lacquered or otherwise protected, but that any surface oxidation will not cause structural damage.

i would have thought from the price of them that anti corrosion would have been added in its molten stage obviously they use a cheap grade aluminium

Buy yourself a vinyl wrap kit from Humvee, it'll cover up the imperfections and protect it from further issues. It'll also look a lot better..

yep I agree too, wrap em up Black will look ace

I had this, I gave up, they are scummy now, covered in stickers and other crap. Use em for sitting on at camp fires, cooking, chopping etc, bikes clean though....I was pissed off at first but after a while....meh.

No - Aluminium, due to its position on the periodic table - is a natural sacrificial anode in everyday life.

Also - the natural oxidation on the surface is not very hard/impervious - so will continue to corrode below.

Chromium Oxide is the Top-Trumps in everyday coatings - just a wee bit hard to apply.

Don't know if this will help but hamerite do a red water based primer that is very good at stopping aluminium oxidisation. If you were going to wrap might be prudent to paint first.

I didn't bother with the BMW alloy panniers.

Luckily I'd already bought some Black Givi Trekkers for my other bike. So they'll convert straight across.

Plastic, top openers (or full opening) keyed alike. No corrosion.

The Givi racks are quick release as well.

Not as lightweight as BMW stuff, but they'll suit for what I need and look good.

Do you think people just automatically buy these boxes without looking around at other options first?

Good point !!

I had the BMW boxes on my new GSA12 in 2006.
They didn't corrode but BMW kindly delivered the bike with rusty pannier frames to match just in case !!

Does make me wonder why people buy these boxes when the price is high and the quality is crap ( bit like the bikes) when you can buy much better quality stuff like Bumots for less.
