Just a heads up to anyone with a 1200GS.

Had mine 3 weeks now, 1650 miles on the clock, spent the past 2 days playing in Snowdonia amongst the torrential rain and sheep droppings. On the way home, stopped in Kidderminster for fuel, left the petrol station with the "Brake Failure" light still on and NO SERVO braking at all, I still had hydraulics but they are next to useless. Managed to limp into a pub carpark and called BMW Assist at 1130 this morning.

They called me back about 1155 to say that the recovery vehicle would be with me in 60 to 90 minutes. I got a call from the driver of the truck at 1405 (you work it out) over 90 minutes anyway. He was on his way and would be with me in 25 - 30 minutes. So at 1505 he turned up with bike trailer, loaded "Molly" and off we went to Clarks in Birmingham.

Whilst unloading the bike I noticed the brake light was stuck on, mentioned this to dealer and 10 minutes later, mechanic returns keys and says "All Done".

What had happened apparently was that some muck had caused the brake light switch on the foot brake to stick, the CAN-BUS system sensed a problem and shut down the Servo's, hence no braking.

If the Servo had failed or indeed the ABS pump, the CAN-BUS would have disabled engine starting too, apparently, so why, I ask did it not shut down the engine as well as the Servo's in this case.

Can anyone enlighten me ??

Got home safely in the end, very wet and very p*ssed off at such a stooopid thing causing me to get home 5 hours late in the pouring rain.

Just got mine back from Allan Jeffries (closest dealer when it broke). I was riding along when I noticed that the brake warning light was flashing away like mad, and I'd a big red warning triangle aswell.

I stopped, turned off the engine, checked the handguard, and foot brake plastic cover thing. Everything seemed ok, so I restarted the bike and very gingerly mad my way to Allan Jeffries and announced the problem. The parts man confirmed it wasn't the handguard (I saw him check  ) and then got the works manager to look. After a few minutes I was told it might be due to a low battery voltage, so they had it on charge. After that, they hooked it up to the computer which eventually said the servo pump had died... massive amounts of pressure to the rear but none to the front  .

They fixed it yesterday, and I collected it this morning, and all seems well :thumb

Doesn't the manual say that in the event of a servo failure you ride the bike to the nearest dealer/repair shop?

Mine had no servo, and a load of fault codes stored in it, but it still restarted!

In case you are wondering how the thread ended up here

I have moved it from the West Midlands section.

That's how things work. I've found the residual braking on the 1200 to be OK. Try it sometime so that you know what to expect as you may want to ignore the warnings and get home - better than waiting for a pickup.

Yes this happened to me on my first Track Day! I ground my rear brake arm away over the course of the day and the little metal switch managed to get stuck under a nut on the arm fooling the system in to thinking there was a problem. The next time I attempted to start it, nothing! Brake faliure light illuminated! I also called BMW assist but luckily figured it out for myself in the car park. ;) I cancelled BMW Assist and resumed my track activities. :D One to watch I think, especially if the rear lever ever gets knocked. :rob

I had the brake failure light flashing yesterday. I did stop and the brakes seem to work fine. Stop the engine and start again the light was off. After half an hour the light came back. The hand brake was wroking fine but the rear brake wasn't . After switching the engine off the light went off and everything has been working fine since. I'll call BMW on Monday to fix it.
