And is it working? Can he check them against a known good one?

He'll also need a filter at the point the Sky+ box plugs in even through it doesn't use a broadband connection itself.

hi just tried that speedtest thingy at the bottom of the page, barely got off tickover, has anyone tried that speed up my pc thing?
im on talk talk, and its barely over dial up speed, but some days it really flies, then some days it stops altogether.

Do you mean TCP Optimizer? I use it now and then to tweak the registry settings and it does improve things. You can download it from here.

However, if you've have technical issues with your BB connection - and it sounds as if you have - then you'll need to get onto Talktalk:nenau

Here is an answer from BT customer support from one of their forums:

Issues resulting in broadband dropping when normal telephone is used can be down to the following

1. Faulty filters
2. Incorrect set up
3. Digital phones interfering with the dsl signal.

On reading back on this thread, we need to find out what may be causing this problem, to establish this in your personal circumstances please contact the Technical Helpdesk on 0845 600 7030 where we will be able to help diagnose your problem correctly.

Disconnection issues seem to be a common feature on the talktalk blog here

Another possibility from this answer:
Connection dropping was a problem I had with BT. They finally put it down to distance from the exchange,. It seems i was on the 6 mile limit.
A low signal is a result of this, and I had to invest in a wireless range extender to fix the problem. This also means I can never get better than 1 MB speeds at the moment.

So I don't think the problem isn't with your friend's set up - probably the problem is with talktalk - good luck, he'll need it!!
