Took my exhaust off was going look at changing it & de cat the downpipes 1st the big clamp bolt had to be cut with angle grinder was firmly sized can came off after a lot of wiggling then to the front pipes 3 nuts fine then snap :blast :banghead:

Anyhow decided as I had a 8 mm helicoil kit may as well drill it out which I did took about an hour went up drill sizes slowly have so,s not to snap them inside alls well again :tarka

Next stage is to cut open the cat

Please enlighten me, do you intend to disembowel the cat so as to reduce back pressure?

I couldn't bring myself to spend many £100's on exhaust upgrade so spent some time cleaning up the old one, which still looks shite but the choice seems to be spend £300 getting the old one coated but it's still the same exhaust or spend £450 on some welded together bits of stainless steel or spunk £1500 on the full Ti dogs danglies.

Think i'm getting tight in my old age...:rob

Iv decatted it :JB cut though with angle grinder thin disc drilled holes all round edge of cat then smashed an old chisel between them soon come out quite a weight too lol just finished welding it back together.
I'm going to polish or might satin black downpipes ? depending how they clean up might look quite trick in black.

GBDamo How does it cost 300 to coat it ? it's made of stainless even though it does still get effected by the salt not that I ride nowadays in shite weather.

The pics are from another post but same as how I done it.

Not the one on my 2011 ADV, its chome plated mild steel. Thats why I was looking at cramic coatings as not much else would adhere to it without stripping back to the base metal.

The cost of any quality treatment is not far off new headers

Sorry to jump in on this thread but is it not possible to just break the cat out with a hammer and chisel? This would alleviate the necessity to part the exhaust and re-weld.

The exit from the cat is at an angle (a bend) so you don't have straight hit at it.

You sure it isn't chrome plated stainless?

The bottom spec is plain stainless and the next step is chrome stainless. Stainless still corrodes with the heat and wet.

Chrome plated stainless ? polished is the only thing Iv ever seen if pipes rust or tarnish they can be shined up again stainless is a very white metal brighter than chrome just takes time Iv done many by hand emery paper or strips of sanding belt then lengths of rag old socks are great with autosolve plenty of elbo grease they look new again ;)

With patience & time you can paint your own pipes easy satin finish sprays best but make sure it's VHT for manifolds or it'll burn off in time I done a few bikes that still looked good 2-3 years later pay me £300 I'll coat it for you :D

Pic of the bend in question has to be cut also if you just hammered the thing it could block exhaust up :blast

Yes chromed stainless. No knowledge of the TC bikes but the hex heads were all like that with the comfort pack I think it was. Like I said stainless tarnishes badly with he heat making most of them look brown. The chromed pipes only go blue unless they aren't looked after. There are lots of different grades of stainless and sadly exhausts are made of pretty low grade.

Having looked at the bend in the exhaust pipe, surely most the cat can be removed to a certain extent? It only needs so much removed to allow the exhaust gases to pass without impeding the flow, ie. if the cross sectional area removed is equal to or more than the original exhaust pipe internal diameter, the rest of the unbroken cat can be left in situ?

Cat removal without cutting has been done before but as I recall, the guy who did it made up some special tools e.g. a bent long spike and then spent several hours with the spike upright in a vice whist wrestling with the headers to chew up the catalyst.

It'd take ages fiddling about easier to cut n reweld it as it's completely gone 100% :comfort never mind tree hungers :upyou

Also might not get so hot now so less tarnishing ?

Results decatted the bike revs easier certainly pulls better makes a slightly deeper tone :JB

After polishing pipework gone slightly golden at front but otherwise all good also had the gear potentiometer off was playing up cleaned & siliconed it around seal edge then it didn't work at 1st but seems to be ok now

Just an assuption, will try the magnet test. Anyhow, it's back on now and has had all it's getting for the now.

There are different types of stainless some magnets lightly stick to others not at all can be left in salt water or swimming pools with no effects the salt on our roads is very aggressive if not rinsed off had a Harley few years ago one night got salty didn't know till next day looked like acid been poured on my side cases  I never got all staining out :(

The Delkevic headers I had on my Yamaha quickly turned dark grey. Polishing "could" restore the shine but not for long.
The Akraprovc headers on my GS also tarnish but not to the same extent.
TBH chrome even satin finish would look better.
