Bullet/helmet cams

thats a good price, saw the same in shop window in ski resort val throens at 500 euros!!!

lots of them about on helmets, thought they looked fragile and exposed to any knocks, eg getting on or off chairlifts....

They're solid... Don't worry....

DRIFT STEALTH HD170 VIDEO CAMERA

I just bought a Drift Stealth HD170 - £125 off Amazon, post free.

As well as fixing it to the side of my helmet I also fancy shooting footage from other parts of the bike. Anyone tried this with the bits that come with the camera - handlebar mount on crashbar perhaps? Is it worth buying the suction clamp for £18?

In addition to using it on my 1150GS on road trips, I also fancy attaching it to my DRZ400 to get some offroad footage - mostly of me falling off probably :blast. Anyone tried this? Tips for good places on the bike to fit it when riding offroad or best just to keep it stuck to the side of my lid?

Hi mate. Great choice of camera. I got mine for xmas and found the helmet mount to be the safest option on the lanes. I'm worried about crushing the camera if I drop the bike with it mounted to it.

I have used the handlebar mount and attached it to the rear hand rail

And I bought an extra mount set so I could have it on both helmets. Above video above is on the MX helmet.

This one is on the road bike helmet

And this one is at dusk mounted to the engine bars

Note:Oh yeah, the quality of the above vids is 720p 25fps as my PC cant manage anything higher at present/

My mate has the Contour HD. Its a good camera.

Hi there, I have the Drift HD170, bought as an xmas pressie to film our off road trips. I started off with it mounted on the handlebars but it picks up too much engine noise and vibration there. I now have it fixed to my helmet which works ok, except with my current helmet I'm unable to position it to avoid seeing some of my helmet peak in the shot. I'm not after perfect shots so it doesnt really bother me that much. I use a Mac & imovie for editing.

Heres some video - I've found it helps to leave the camera running as you never know what you may capture!

I hope you enjoy your new toy.

J-M - thanks for reposting that vid. It makes me smile!

Isn't it a real b'tard when trees leap out in front of you like that?

:D

loved that idea :)

I've just ordered a Gopro Hero 2 from Digigood via Amazon £225.

Can I interest anyone in a Veho Muvi HD7?

The Drift Stealth HD170 is currently fantastic value at approx £130 because Drift have a newer, smaller camera, which they seem to call the Drift HD:eek
From what I can tell, the main differences are size and the new one does 9Mp stills and the option of a remote mike.
The shape, the size, the rotating interchangeable lens, the remote control for your handlebar and the inbuilt LCD have convinced me to buy one today for £249.99. Historically these have been selling for £260-£300, which is not competitive, so at least they are now in GoPro territory.
I do think that the GoPro my just have a slight colour saturation advantage, but it is minimal from what I have seen
I am selling my old Non HD Drift on ebay with one day left if anyone is interested:D

I have a Contour GPS, which has pros and cons......

Pros:
Good HD footage.
Using Contours' software - shows tracking on map or terrain.

Cons:
Battery removal is fiddly
Don't buy Contour spare batteries - they are re-wrapped Nokia batteries. (£20 compared to £4 for Nokia)

I also picked up a Drift X170 in December, new from Amazon for £58.50 - boxed with all accessories...... they are really cheap these days.

Al :thumb2

Here is an interesting side by side movie comparison of Contour HD /Drift HD/GoPro HD:

Was the reason i took the gopro..... Just thought the colours were more intense but they are all fantastic at the end of the day!!!

Drift HD arrived today and first impressions are disappointment in jerkiness of 1080p movies, especially when panning. At this early stage I am suspecting a micro SD card issue because I purchased a ridiculously cheap Kingston 16GB Class 4 Micro SD for the shockingly cheap price of £3.90 plus P&P =£8.36
Drift recommend a minimum speed of class and there are plenty of reasonable faster class 6 and a Class 10 Samsung available for £14, which may be my next experiment.
Does anyone have experience with jerky 1080p and does anyone agree that the card could be the cause? Perhaps I have been a cheap skate with the purchased micro SDcard ? I am not damning the camera yet and will give a full review later

Its the SD card..

My Drift works excellently at 1080 @ 30fps and 720 @ 60fps, using a Transcend 16GB SDHC Class 10 card (£12.95 from Amazon)

Video is smooth as silk...:thumb2

I have ordered the faster SD card and I hope that you are right Brian.
Drift specify :
Recommended System Requirements – Windows
• 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor or higher
• At least 2GB of RAM
• Graphics Card with at least 256MB of video RAM (512MB for video edition)
• Direct X 9.0c or later
• Microsoft Windows XP (SP2 or later), Windows Vista or Windows 7
Recommended System Requirements - Macintosh
• 2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo or higher
• At least 1GB of RAM
• Graphics Card with at least 256MB of video RAM (512MB for video edition)
• Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later

My PC, therefore does not meet system requirements for this 1080p stuff :eek

Ill report further when I have a faster SD card next week ... if anyone's interested :D

My PC cant play the 1080 stuff from the drift either. It is jerky. 720p @60fps wont work right either.

I use the Samsung SDHC Class 8 8GB card in mine with it running at 720p 30fps

I'll be interested how you get on GrinningGSer

Its easy to blame the PC spec, and I have downloaded the latest DirectX9 with no improvement, but uploading to a vid hosting site should remove PC issues. Like yours, my vid is jerky when viewed from the net, so I suspect that the actual saving of the movie to the card, could be the issue. In which case Yonkyo is correct.
It would seem that all of this new fangled high res stuff requires massive data processing.

Initial thoughts are that it's all high res bollo**s, and Ill do a comparison with a 'proper' digital camera when I have time, cos even the 9MP stills, which are the highest for this type of camera, are truly shite compared to a quality small compact and shite compared to my HTC mobile phone.:D

Its a shame that you didn't get on with the Macbook, because the one thing they are absolutely brilliant at, is video editing.
My little Macbook i5, runs rings around my very high spec. Sony Vaio i7 (running windows 7 pro 64bit, with 1gig Nvidia graphics), when it comes to handling HD video.
