I was replacing the rocker cover gaskets on my r1150gs and noticed that the right hand cylinder had a distinctive burnt oil smell that was not present with the left hand cylinder.

I found a YouTube video from Chris Harris from a while back mentioning such a smell from a cylinder head he was working on to replace pushrods but he doesn't conclude a cause.

Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions?

Does it leak ?

No??

All is good! Set the tools down and Walk away

P.S. change the rocker gaskets on an 1150??? Were you bored and just looking for something to do ??

Never have changed any in 30 years of working on Oilheads

just the spark plug tunnel rubber seals that sometimes swell and are a pain !!

P.P.S. Left hand Rocker cover has the filler cap and you would be surprised just how NOT sealed they are after a lot of miles!! So it gets to vent and breath

Right side definitely capped and not much chance of ventilating save a damaged cover

Many thanks for the advice on the smell gives me peace of mind. I had a set of spare gaskets that came with the bike and thought I would check the valve train components and just changed them as the other set were a bit more flexible but not by much.
