bye bye 800

Sorry mate, that was your bike. The holes in the sides were there and the cut down seat are giveaways. I don't know what they did to her but she was in a poor state and the front of the engine was knackered, covered in oil and dirt and there was silicon sealant all over the right side indicating the gasket had been recently replaced. The clocks were damaged and had odd burn marks along the top as well. Obviously someone else has been using it since she left your ownership.

well we certainly have a difference of opinion in what constitutes a sorry state. The man from BMW clearly didn't think it was in a sorry state. As he signed it off.

To me these bikes would constitute a sorry state.

saying the clocks were damaged suggests the clocks don't work. This is not true.

after I installed the Touratech screen the sun had been magnified and left two melt marks on the very outer plastic of the clocks. This did not break the clocks themselves.

It is well documented by others here.

You are right about the gasket. It had been "fixed" four times previously but I think this appears to be common to a lot of the 800's. I had ridden the bike back from Austria and gave it a jet wash the night before it was picked up. I decided not to clean the oil from the leaking gasket because I figured BMW would pass it off as ok and I thought why should some poor bugger fork out 4k for a bike only to find the gasket gone. Did the dirt stick to it, I'm sure it did. Did I detail and polish the engine. No. Was the engine corroded. No.

The bike has done 35,000 relatively easy road miles. Has been to over 26 countries and thus has traveled. It was never wheelied (I cant do wheelies ) taken to the red line or generally abused (Even if Rudiemoto did drop it the adventure-spec crash bars took the brunt). It's certainly not like most BMW's that get pampered with cotton buds and covered in baby oil and never leave the garage.

I know before it went back Srace7 had seen it, as did Greger, IDE508, zippygser, andreels, GunzNBombz, Chas820, Ewan, Ted1972, Micky and Si Johnston. I'd be interested if they thought it was in a sorry state as it gives an unfair impression of how I cared for the bike. Just my 2p :thumb

admittedly embarking on a 150 mile journey with straps in these positions wont have done the panels much good.

Cheers Chad,

for sure. Here's a fella who did a similar Eastern European route to our Sibirsky tour on a CB500.

and in the background is the sticker I put on the Montenegro country sign. It just goes to show you can do these trips on any bike as long as its reasonable comfortable.

No problem. People have differences of opinion but a knackered engine pissing oil on the floor, knackered front end, brake pads lower than the new UK government's morals and side stand bent three quarters past the hour indicate that this bike was only worth leaving alone. If the guy from BMW said it was ok then either he's somehow seen worse or sexual favours were traded. Either this bike was owned by someone who had no respect for it whatsoever or it has been abused since it left your ownership. Either way, this bike was a mess and I was there to buy and had already decided to leave this well alone.

The 800 was a mess, every panel had damage, the front of the engine was rotten from a top seal leak, the front brakes and bearings were shot, the side-stand was bent and the clocks were damaged. After seeing that I declined to bid myself, especially as it opened for more than i was willing to pay.

I dont want to labour the point but I'm just going over some of the points I missed earlier.

The side stand was not bent. It never had any damage. Was it the best side stand in the first place, certainly not. I think BMW have a blind spot when it comes to side stands. on the G650's they were making the bikes too upright. On the 800 and 650 twins they were raked over too far and some bikes were pivoting on them and falling over. Just to prove that the side stand was not bent here is my bike behind Zippygser's a week before it went to Auction...

Either they have an identical bend or they were never bent in the first place . If the bearings were shot (which had been replaced by BMW last september) how did I get from Austria to Manchester???

The front brake pads did need replacing but would have lasted another 1000 miles. I replaced the rears and had mistakingly ordered only one front pad. I was going to order a second but when I learnt the bike I was going back there was no incentive for me to do so.

does it really matter ? or am i missing the point...?

don't mind me only my twisted opinion :blast

I've lost count of the cool stuff I've had to sell, lost or broke over the years, it's just stuff nothing else...

jesus you've only just noticed....:blast

you been to spec savers recently or do you stand in the butchers thinking odd... very odd....

It doesn't matter one jot. It's not my bike anymore but I've had a shitty day and I'm venting my spleen. jtw000 is making out I've handed back a shit heap and I take exception to that. Anyone that knows me on here has seen me obsess over that bike for two years and so it's no doubt my ego getting the better of me but reading his other posts he thinks all bikes engines rot in the UK whatever that means.

Anyway I'm done now and whoever bought it will have a grand time on it when they get a new set of front pads, a service and another rocker gasket.

you look shorter... that's Chad by the way... thought I'd clear that up.....

right I'm off been working with yet another Celeb type who in my opinion needs to be gassed, waste of space...bellend...! with too much money not enough sense or manners.

jon you and others here know the bike was ok ... if its as bad as he was saying then i suspect it has had some abuse since leaving your caring hands:(

jtw000 you might want to back off a bit jon dont really need this shit

Bike looked fine to me when I saw it and sounded sweet too...

Was a bit "tall" I thought for it's pilot with the airhawk... :augie

But other than that it looked good - for an 800 !! :D

Just saying what I saw and from the tone of the posts I think it's pretty clear what happened to this bike.
