Hi all

Can someone please advise whether removing the left and right cam chain tensioners causes the chain to drop, meaning I’d need to do the timing again, or is it a case of just remove the old ones and put new ones in with no stress?

Cheers
Mike

No need to do the RH tensioner
It doesn’t benefit from a change
It’s only the LH side that should be changed

Cheers Johnny,

Yep, i know - the problem is I’ll be putting tatty CCTs back in my newly painted engine, and they’re a big lump to ‘see’. I could just spray over the right hand one, but it’ll never be right. Pedantic, I know!

Plan is to put an updated one in the left, and a new ‘original’ one in the right. I just need to confirm if there’s any timing chain issues related to simply unbolting the old ones and putting new ones in place, such as the chain dropping a tooth on the sprockets.

Best to do the work at TDC so there is no pressure on the cams.

I'm changing the tensioner on my KTM 890 with a one from Dirt Tricks to get rid of the noise the original makes.

I just swapped out the left one, no timing issues. Fairly simple job. I did the pushrods at the same time, engine purrs nicely now.

I looked at doing the right one but having to remove the exhaust headers and all the trouble that can bring with no benefit changed my mind.

i suppose I hadn’t considered that…it’s been six months since mine had headers on!
