If the USB doesn't supply enough volts, even by .2v you can get problems with drop-outs.
I don't like the ball mounts. Its a big unit and you'll get quite a lot of wobble, especially on your roads

Extended, as in you want a post (at the point circled red) so as to sit the ball higher, so it sets the jaws of the clamp (circled green) clear the lugs?
I guess you might be able to Dremel a slot or gap into the jaws of the clamp, so that it clears the lugs, without the clamp’s jaws failing to grip?
