A reminder really that these stickers are stuck to the fuel pumps across France. Not sure if same applies to other forecourts.

Wow! That seems a lot.

So is it €450 every time you fill up, or is the system smart enough to know that it took €450 earlier that day and use that?

Edit: I see the whole matter is rendered irrelevant by the post above :)

Yes, that’s on HGV pumps

However, be aware that normal pumps generally do the same, they check that your card has sufficient funds to pay for 140 euros or something like that, you’ll see a message to that effect once your card is accepted

It’s only a problem when you have been using your card a lot, for hotels etc, it could push you up to your weekly limit even though you haven’t paid 140 euros, it all depends on your card conditions

just use a credit card. Let your card issuer hold the preauthorisation against your credit limit not the funds in your current account or prepaid card. It's no coincidence that these payments seemingly rationalise a lot quicker than when they bank is holding onto your money.

It’s been going on for a number of years. Not least, some petrol outlets in the UK do it, too. As Wessie says, just use a credit card.

Don’t forget that some hotels do the same. Bods on the forum have moaned about the Enzian hotel, stiffing them before arrival.

My local COSTCO PFS does preauthorise £120 every time I fill up. As it is fully automated and has no physical payment kiosk/booth. When I fill up my van, it'll regularly come to around £100 or there about. Meaning that my card essentially -£220 for uptown 48h.

Painful using a Monzo card (not sure with Revolute) as each fuel station transaction takes around 6 weeks for the balance to be refunded.
I only use my normal bank debit card for fuel stations and take the foregn exchange charge rather than using my holiday Monzo or Revolute card.

I understand that they still take the preauthorization on normal bank cards, but it clears quickly unaffecting your balance.

Ibis Hotels do it and stiff the Monzo for around 6 weeks I changed my card on the Accor website reserving hotel rooms with a credit card problem solved.

I paid petrol multiple times with Monzo over the last few years, never had the 6 weeks issue to be fair.
I generally use my charge cards, but a few times switched to Monzo for no particular reason.

IF the pre-charge (~120) appears, within a short timeframe (hour or so) the correct amount is applied.

Just back from France after 5 nights away. Each and every (unmanned) fuel station had a preauthorisation of anywhere between €120 & €200 whilst only filling up with €35-€40 worth of fuel. The latter was a killer for two straight days, meaning I had to use my credit card for all other transactions, whilst racking up non sterling fees and less than favourable exchange rates.
Whatever happened to good old tea huts and even older attendants.

Get yourself a Halifax Clarity credit card for free.
I took your last advice of HSBC Global Money card. Great it is indeed, but I doubt any card would stand a chance at a prepayment pump.

I'm still here.

Many of the bigger supermarkets have the option to pay at a hut after fuelling, similar to Eric Leclerc's at Fumel.* 👍

* Daytime hours only though.

I've been using my Santander Credit Card, sans issue. No extra fee for using it abroad, better rates than changing my £s into Euros at my local Cambio/Wechsel in Pooky Hollow.

the credit limit on a proper travel credit card soaks up any preauthorisation. Plus, as the money "held" is not your money but the card issuer's, it gets rationalised very quickly. Funny that.

I had a travel account filled with €200

Filled up - & snacks as well going down to Sid & Ann's. used €103 added another €100 Ditto on the reverse

its showing €77 today

No issues filling at all even with any preauthorisations taking place

From what ive heard, the once the fuelling is complete - the two sums are calculated and the preauth is released immidiatly

No holding for weeks/ days
