Cast Wheel Conversion ....The Facts!

That's great,

I made a slight error with my renewal, as in that I used M C Edwards. What I didn't know at the time, was that every policy alteration cost me a £20 admin fee, so even if there is no charge from the insurers, if the policy wording needs changing...... £20 please.

I don't know if this is usual, but if it isn't, I'll be changing insurer next time and telling them why. I do believe that my current policy is Equity Red Star. Edwards charge it as a broker fee.

Cheers

Robin

If you really want the bike to handle put a 160-60 on the 5" rim.
It's REALLY noticeably more agile than a 170.
A 180-55 works and looks well FAT but the bike will prefer to stay upright.
The fatter the rear tyre, the slower the handling (on all bikes)

Needed a rear tyre a few weeks ago late one Sat afternoon, all I could get was a 160 BT010- As you say really makes a difference, much more agile & actually feels more secure/settled especially at greater lean angles:confused:
Be interesting to see if the profile affects wear rate...
1,600 miles out of a MEZ3 then 2,800 out of a BT020 nearly had me back on spokes

2004GSa

Has anyone done or contempleted chainging to cast wheels yet, was speaking to Motorworks and they are telling me there are differences in the 2004 model compared to 2002, 2003 , seems the discs are bigger and the part no,s for the hubs and axle does match with the parts no,s for the earlier GSA.
Seems the 2002 2003 model is easy to convert, any ideas fellas i could do with some help on this one please.

Cheers Steve

In speaking to them I understand that any build past Jan/Feb 2003 has differences (well Adventure) and they have not tried. Boxerperformance however have a kit including wheels that will cover that period for both ABS & non ABS. Bit of difficulty conversing with them as English is not their choice of language....

Biggest cost in the kit are the wheels (1100S) and currently they offer 5.5inch rims. But very helpful and will try hard to please.

I got an 1100S rear wheel (5inch) off ebay with Diablo so will be fitting shortly... at the same time I will change the shocks...

wheels

Steve,

I `ve the very wheels on my 1100 which will fit all as far as I`m aware.
If you want I`ll let you have a look / try. Probably be at the office in Belfast with it if you want a duke.
Look at my avatar.

Have anyone fit a rear 5,5" R1100S wheel on a R1100GS?

What mods did you have to do?

I know someone who tried it, but the dealers showed it to him & the tyre was rubbing against the swingarm. They tried all sorts to try & space it/align it, but they couldn't do it & keep the wheels in line. I think it was a problem with the design of the 1100 swingarm. It's not as sculpted as the later models

I have actually fitted a 5,5" R1100S wheeel with 180 tyre on my R1100GS, but it was rubbing aganist the stock silencer. There was no clearance problems to the swingarm, but the big problem was that it was out off line by 7,5mm.

I estimated that I could machine 5mm off the center of the wheel and have about 1mm of clearance to the swingarm and then the wheel would be 2,5mm out off line.

When I mounted the wheel it was very tight (about 1mm to the swingarm) and when I was pushing the bike hard the swingarm was scratching the paint on the rim. After I have removed some of the sharp edges from the casting on the swingarm I had 2mm clearance and it works now. On the other side of the wheel the clearance is 1mm to the silencer.

It's not perfect when the wheel is 2,5 mm out off line, but this is not something that I noticed when i'm riding.

Both of these would be an MOT (annual roadworthiness test) failure, here in the UK. They test for wheel alignment..... :(

I don't think you will have a faliure. Acccording to the workshop manual 9mm is the maximum tolerance for track offset. Normally the offset is +3mm to the right. So on my bike the offset should be +5.5 mm to the right.

In Sweden we don't have a test for wheel alignment, but they are really concernd about my shortened stalks for the rear indicators. :nono It has to be minimum 180mm between the indicators, not 160mm! :) Maybe I also need to add that I have to remove the turbo before the test. :mmmm

Wheels

Do the wheels from a R 1150 RT -02 fit my R1150Gs-01? Are the brakedisc the same to?

low mudguard

Has anyone got any suggestions for a front mudguard for their 1150's with 17"s on? Apart from £140 carbon ones.
Cheers

Col :)

In my intro to the site,(Standard Greetings),i described my 06 1200 GS which i have had fitted with 17" ST (pentagram pattern) wheels. It was done by Pidcocks at Long Eaton, and Chris Pidcock has had a Big Bucks version done (Carbon panels and guards),which is available as a demo bike. If you can find a copy of Supermoto mag,(Summer issue) they did a road test on it which gave a quite good report.I have enjoyed using mine in this trim, the only problem i have encountered is the n/s foot of the centre stand needs to be trimmed as the inner edge runs close to the 180 section tyre.
