Cast Wheel Conversion ....The Facts!

I know you said that you don't like the look of it, but to be honest, there are only the two manufactured after market front guards made AFAIK....

Here's one that's a fair bit cheaper than new, and you can always spray it a colour if you need to...;)

I've had both, I prefer the one supplied by Fallert for actual protection but it looks like it's out of production... I did ask about them a while ago, still waiting for a reply...

I seem to recall someone on here managed to attach/convert a guard off an 1100s to fit the 1150 forks... try a search and if you find it, let me know please...:D

Thanks CC - I might see if any of the other BMW R range fit (and even then see if they look any good!)

First things first. Can anybody tell me precisely what model these wheels are from?
I have bought them on ebay intending to fit them to my R1100GS and am picking them up tomorrow. The chap reckons they were off an R1100RS but looking at pics of the RS they seem to have the 3 spoke design, or did later models of the 1100RS have these maybe?

I have read this thread from start to finish and am still none the wiser as to what I will need to do to get these to fit on my 1100GS.

Do any of you guys KNOW what I need. I don`t want to know what worked on your 1150 as I will just get confused. It doesn`t take much!
Ta kindly.

does your 1100GS have ABS ? as this makes a difference

the wheels look like there off a S model, they look identical to the set I fitted to my GS and mine and when I did a search of the part number thats embossed on the wheels it came up under the S model
you may find that there from the time when BMW used common parts across a range of there bikes S, RT, RS so forth

Mine is non ABS.
From what I have read I think my discs should just bot straight on. My confusion is over speedo drive and spacers. It looks from the picture that the wheel is made to take a speedo drive, at least it looks like the little two `tabs` are visible.

you'll need a different speedo drive, the one you have will fit but it'll read wrong (over read as in it'll read your going faster than you are),

can't help with the spacer as it's an 1150 I have so does need it,

I believe it was the cast ABS ring that caused some issues as the stand off's on one side needed milled down a wee bit to accomondate the thicker cast ring, but not an issue for yourself

Anyone know which speedo drive I need i.e. from which bike/s?

Those wheels are from an 1150 RT/RS/RT & have the tangs for the speedo drive. For your GS you need the 2.6:1 speedo drive & just use the GS spacer for the right hand side. I would try the GS ABS ring for a start & be prepared to shell out for a pressed metal one if you find a problem. The rear wheel will need shorter wheel bolts which are cheap as chips secondhand from M/works, etc.

HTH,

HTH,

That is the kind of precise answer I like!:thumb2
I bought an RS speedo drive today on ebay as I guessed it must be the one.
I do not have ABS so that is one less thing to worry about.
No machining to do to anything then. That is a relief. Sounds like I have everything I need then.
Thanks

I'm about to fit my cast wheels tomorrow (I hope!)

My bike's a 1150GS (2003) and I've bought 1150 RT (2003) wheels.

As far as I have ben able to research, the discs and ABS rings from my GS should fit straight on to the RT wheels

I bought new disc bolts from Motorworks (apparently you need them to use the GS ABS rings and discs on the RT wheels) and also the right length rear wheel bolts, also from Mototrworks (they were very helpful advising me on what I'd need)

I've then got the RT speedo drive, soooooooo... fingers crossed I have all I need.

I'll take pictures tomorrow to document the fitting assuming I get it right!

Urgent advice required!!
Fitting my alloys which are pictured above today and I have hit a problem. I swapped the front discs over without any problems but when I put the wheel in and tightened the spindle nut it stops the wheel from rotating. Comparing the new alloy with the original wheel it looks like the inner steel tube into which the spindle is inserted protrudes further out on the speedo drive side on the original wheel so when you tighten everything up it still gives a small clearance to the speedo drive allowing the wheel to turn. As the steel tube on the new wheel doesn`t come out so far when it is tightened the speedo drive has no clearance and is tightening up against the bearing dust cover thingy.
Anybody have any ideas why this would happen.
The speedo drive I have is supposed to be one for an RS with the different ratio and looks identical to the original so I presume it is just the gearing that differs. I am wondering if the wheels are from a `less compatible` bike maybe?

All cast wheels will be compatible. It sounds lie you might have a front wheel from an ABS bike. Early ABS wheels used a pressed metal ABS ring and had slightly shorter discs mounts on the wheel to compensate for the extra width of the ABS ring. I had this issue with my first set of cast wheels. You’ll need to buy a used ABS ring to space the wheel correctly. You could probably prove this by fitting a set of washers under the disc but I wouldn’t recommend riding the bike like this!

HTH:)

I haven`t even fitted the calipers yet so don`t know if I will have a problem with disc spacing, but that is a seperate issue from what I am asking now anyway. The problem is the speedo drive `clamping` against the bearing dust cover.
Look at the pics I just added.

I have just checked disc spacing and it is the same for both wheels at about 117mm

Sounds like the wrong speedo drive too - mine was from an RT and definitely looked a bit different from the GS one - I have spare ABS rings if you want them - just cover the postage and they're yours :thumb2

you need this. Part No motorworks wha50348.

Look at post 123 on this thread. It used to have a photo, but it aint appearing to me.

Does it differ other than the ratio then i.e. is the inner spacer bit longer which will give me the clearance?

Beat me to it! Picture not showing for me either, but I remember them looking distinctly different.
