I've just backed up some of my data to CDs using Nero and Windows XP and I've got a verify error on 3 sectors.
I've repeated the same backup 3 times now and always get the verify error on 3 sectors although the sector numbers do change each time.
I run this backup every month and last month there were no sector errors.
Backup size is 364 mb.
I've checked a few of the files that I've backed up and they were fine.
I've also backed up some different files and they worked correctly.
I assume the sectors are duff on the hard disk and nothing to do with my CD writer ?
So how can I find what is on these duff sectors ?
And how big is a sector ?
Thanks very much.

What version of Nero are you using?

If it's a later version (7 for example) you may well have a code that may tell us more.......here they are (from the Nero faq)

That may at least give a clue, but if the files work, it does sound like a data transfer error rather than a proper segment fault error on your HD.

A sector is usually 512 bytes by the way ;)

It might be modified blocks in the filesystem that have changed since the backup, and you probably don't need to worry too much. Things like dates in directory blocks if you touch any file/dir. There's no obvious system files in the set is there, that would definitely change over time?

No system files, no just own personal data stuff.
Here's the error log below for interest/comment and thanks for your time Fanum and ianf, appreciated. -

A suggestion - if you have virtual drive software (something like MagicDisc or MagicIso) that is creating virtual CD drives they will cause verification errors - get rid of all the virtual CD drives before writing a CD.

Can't see much wrong there.......you get the
Burn process completed successfully at 40x (6,000 KB/s)
message.......

There's an error concerning a time out, that may be due to spin down time or other processes hanging the time up too much......

I'm far from being an expert on it, but I wouldn't be worried (TBH I never even bother with verification when i burn stuff!) and if it works, it works....

Make sure you're fully defragged (changing your swapfile to another partition is a good idea) and as long as you have a useable copy of whatever you were backing up, don't worry about it ;)

Thanks Fanum, I never used to bother with verification but started to use it a while ago. I do quite religiously run backups now though, since I had the hard disk fry after the fan stopped working that is.
I digress.
No MagicDisc or MagicIso here Bob (don't even know what they do to be honest).
Thanks for your time people, I'll stop worrying although I wasn't overly concerned but thought I'd better ask an expert just in case.

Might be worth thinking about another approach.....what are you actually backing up???

If it's Emails and files, try doing a files and settings backup which will give you a .pst file....then save than onto CD or even onto a 250 gig HD (about £70 from pretty much any pc place)

There are numerous backup places online- some free, some cost, but if you have broadband and the info isn't seriously sensitive, that might be a good palce to dump a spare copy of stuf.

Acronis is also a great thing to play with.....back up everything, do a file and settings save then re-install the whole OS inc AV, fancy drivers and flash, quicktime, firewall, desktops etc etc then save an exact image- after that, all you have to do is an incremental backup using Acronis and for double safety a PST file save and you're pretty well backed up ;)

I'm only backing up personal data.
Stuff like Acronis is getting into unknown territory for me and we moved from the UK to France last year and my little geek friend refuses to come over to our new abode to sort me out when I have a problem so trying to keep things really simple if I can.
But thanks for the suggestions.

Acronis is a great solution and pretty simple to use. hardest part is creating a partition for it to write to, and that's not rocket science :)

Run a disk check in a command prompt...

chkdsk C: /F /R

it will say something like "disc in use schedule check after reboot y/n" - when you reboot it will check the disc sectors before restarting XP
