Just given my bike a good look over and clean after getting it last week. It's a 2008 GS and immaculate except the center stand cross bar is rusting (stone chips?)...

Bike is going in for a new ESA unit (split grommet!) tomorrow and wondered if anybody has the same as above?:)

Cheers

Steve

Dealer replaced mines after a few weeks due to the same problem........new one went the same way within a couple of weeks........! Wire brush and Hammerite from now on ah'm afraid!:D:D:D Ok it's painted with black poster paint fresh from the factory.......however in their defence it must take a good sandblasting when out on the road!

My dealer says they will take pics and send to BMW. Looks like stone chips.

So worth powercoating instead?

The centre stand gets a right bashing from all the road crap so there is no way you`ll keep it good. I`d hate to think what mine looks like:eek:

If it really is an issue, (but I can`t think why) hammerite it and don`t look at it very often.

Will BuMW really change it under warranty???

I read (on this site I think) that Aberdeen BMW replaced someones stand.

My thought was to Hammerite the middle bit then 3m it!

Mines as rusty as its always been.

Still strong enough to support the bike though.

They all do that sir ......
Cover it in broad black tape, 2 thicknesses. Repeat when that's worn through by road grit.
Alternatively, fit a Rugged Roads aluminium plate which will cover the crossbar, (that's what I did).
Cheers

Mines the same, along with rust and corrosion in all the usual places.

My local dealer have already agreed to change some parts under warranntee, they are having the bike on Tuesday next week, the list of jobs looks like a bad failure sheet for an old Cortina :(, not a 6 month old bike!:D

I think I'm quite lucky with this one - 2500 miles, a year old and one stonechip + stand! Surprised you can't get the rubber grommet for the rear ESA but as long as its warranty I dont mind!

Mine went like that after a few months, I pointed it out at the 1 year service and they said they'd sort it out, probably repaint it they said. When I collected it they'd fitted a new one (Southport Superbikes :thumb2 )

I realise the centre stand takes a lot of punishment but the one on my old VFR took nearly 3 years to get as bad as that. :nenau

Mines rusted as well on my 08 GSA

Couldn't care less what it looks like as long as its still solid enough to do its job, I don't think its gonna be an issue to most :augie

I'm not bothered at all really, just wondering if its worth painting....

Just away out to try our my new rukka gear in the rain :)

I reckon most of the paint is blasted off by spray and grit from the front wheel, try a fender extender-here's a good one..........

It might look a bit bling for a GS but it's wide and reaches down quite low and prevents a lot of crap hitting the front engine cover/sump guard/centre stand etc and it's reasonably priced too at £17-ish
I got one and it seems to help ;)

MAybe that was what caused it. Just got a Pyramid one fitted last week. Makes it seem like less crap gets thrown up onto the exhaust at least and alternator belt cover! At least on my 08 I dont have the sponge corrosion!

What I did with my stand was spit a lenght of black garden hose and slip it over the cross bar a bit of black tape job done :beerjug::beerjug::beerjug:

+1 but I used some plastic fish pond hose. I'll post a pic when I find out how. Problem was the stand was almost knackered already after 1500 miles. I'll get it to the dealer at the next service and then put the hose back on straight away. Looks nice too...
