Both of my past GS bikes have suffered from light corrosion on the cross member of the centre stand obviously being exposed to the worst weather under the bike.

Is there a good way of protecting the paintwork whilst the bike is new?

3 strips of electrical tape. Replace as necessary - doesn’t cost much - works perfect for me.

BM does a plastic guard that fits on with tie wraps and protects the crossbar part no 46 63 8 388 657. Ive just ordered one from my local dealer.

It doesn't work, does it ?

Well looking at it it should. When the stand is in the up position is when you need the protection from all those little stones n other shite that flies onto it from the back wheel. However i will concede that the front ( when stand is down) of the stand crossbar is exposed, so when my guard comes (its on order) i will fit some Heli tape across the front to protect it from the odd stray stone that may hit it.

No it doesn't. Despite an attempt to create a little 'wing' to deflect stuff away from the crossmember that's left unprotected it doesn't work. The 1250 GSA demonstrator at Cotswold has one fitted. A few weeks back I just ran my finger across the crossbar and I could already feel the starting of pitting.

Yes just put some of that thick self adhesive clear plastic stuff on it - works perfectly, however on all my bikes since 2010 I haven’t bothered, I just stop the rust with a frequent wipe of ACF50 :)

Helicopter tape, Duck tape or Self amalganating tape. Just so long as it is durable and water resistant, it will protect it on the cheap.

Took a length of round black plastic electrical conduit, split it lengthways with a hacksaw, coated inside with some corrosion block grease and, using a suitable lever to open the gap, slipped it over the cross member. Done this on all the RTs and GSs I've owned and never had a problem with corrosion on the cross member.

That's what I use, cost 50p (although I use pre-split conduit)

Great idea, did you steal it from a Scotsman ? sounds like the type of thing we Scots would do :blast:augie:D

I use some cheap pipe insulation held in place with a couple of cable ties for the vulnerable points. Costs pennies, does the job. That and a Rugged Roads centre-stand bash plate to prevent or reduce muck from plastering suspension linkages.
