Went to move the bike this morning, and noticed it was a bit quiet comming of the centre stand.

Upon checking, the centre stand seemed sluggish to return.

Firrst thought was lubrication, second springs

i had a quick butchers, and even worse the bolt holding the stand in place was missing. :blast

A quick cable tie later got me to work , and 30 mins on realoem got the relevant parts identified and ordered.

I hedged my bets and went all out and ordered a new bolt, bush, o rings and pivot bearing.

As i left work, i noticed an object in the middle of the bike lane -

The missing bolt from the stand ... clearly sheared off.

I was running through the reasons for the sieze on the way home and concluded that the pivot & bearing

had lost lubrication and seized, and in doing so had passed the rotational force to the bolt which had in turn sheared off.

When i got home and had a look, this is what i found

The bolt has sheared inside the pivot bearing, not where i'd expect the load to be,

closer examination of the bolt confirms that it has been turning on the threads nearest the chamfer, as they are flattened.

looking at the pivot bearing it was not siezed, and could be turned and removed by hand, the o rings were in place and it still

has lubricant evident on it.

The next thing to see is , is the bearing still in the stand, or was one ever fitted?

The repair cd says use suitable tools to pull it out, anyone got any ideas what to use ??

or will it push out from the other side with a screwdriver.??

Im going to write to the mothership and ask if this is a known failure, and ask, nay demand they start a recall campaign.

clearly this is a unexpected event which will require the tosser investigation team to be assembled !

I know what 'The Mothership' will say as I'm a fortune teller.

Happened to my ex missus's gsa and mine, I have heard of quite a few others, I have even had my centre stand twist and bend so badly that the left side that you use to put it on the stand with your foot hit the ground on left hand corners, I had to buy a secondhand stand from motorbikes, BMW didn't want to know.

Should have said from motorworks. Bloody spellcheck.

Got the stand off,

LHS seems fine its been off before because some bright sparK had added an extra O ring and the locking compound was not OE

RHS is a different kettle of fish the Moly lube had basically turned to a thick paste over time.

I cant shift the inner bronze type bearings, but to be honest with the inner bearing in,

there dosent seem to be a whole lot of movement.

I'll know more when i see the state of the new bearing tommorow

Oh and just to round it off lol, i bust my 3/8>1/4" adaptor

And when i was underneath, it looks like my rear shock has the beginings of a leak, oh fcukity fcuk :(

Common fault, found half a bolt on my drive about 2 years after purchase. Next one will be the shitty welding on the crossbar that will rust through, and snap when a dealer spins your bike on the centre stand. They’ll blame you, and leave you high and dry to go find another off eBay.

Mine went the same, new bolts fitted from moto bins and kept eye on - and ensured kept lubricated, no problems

I replace the offside (spring side) bolt every two years as part of standard maintenance. Have had that bolt break twice. Bad design. Stainless part from Motorworks not ideal as head is slightly too big for countersink in stand. Removing bushings worthwhile once bolt knackered

Yep, a very common problem. I see at least one broken pivot bolt a month, and a twisted stand every couple of months.

And I see jackets for sale on here in XXXL size . Is there a link ?

Parts arrived today :)

The bush is different though ?

In the stand i have what appear to be a 14mm Dia Bronze type bush. Approx 1mm wall thickness

What turned up today is a split rolled bush with about a .25mm wall thickness

i havn't been out to check if it fits in the original apature, will pop out to the shed later ,

The original bushes were well and truly stuck in the stand,

So i dressed them with emery paper, and put the newly lubricated trunnions back in.

Typically rain stopped play, so i'll put it back on tommorow weather permitting

I took the centre stand off my bike. All it ever did was get gravel-rashed from the rear wheel and (in my case) nearly seized up on the pivot points. It will go back when I sell the bike.

Must be fun when you change your tyres. Lol.

I had this happen to me was in France at the time, I stuck the bike on centre stand and the bike just fell over. :blast

I didn,t notice the sheared bolt at the time and just picked the bike up and put it on the side stand thinking i'd been quite careless.

It was only on the way home a few days later a wear line appeared on the rear tyre where the centre stand had been rubbing that i realised what was up.

i put it down to over zealous ferry staff over tightning the wratchet straps, fairly alarming to realise id ridden a few hundred miles like that.
