Chain recall thread

The recall stays on the for the life of the bike untill it gets done... so just dont bother if you've already changed the chains and sprockets, just wait for those to wear out then go get your recall...

Told this by two dealers..

Who are the dealers who are just giving out the parts? This is odd as some i speek to say that they need the old stuff to send back to bmw, unless this is bullcrap..

Time Limit on recalls (some ofthem anyway)

Be carefull with this as some recals have a time limit on them, For example the throttle cables on my LT that stick were only a recall for a limited time and after that tuff. I got tuff €130 parts plus €500 fitting, After many hours I did it myself.

mine is an July 08 f650 with a cz chain checked with dealer north of liverpool who initially booked it in then said they would check ,result not on list , suggested I contact BMW cust serv. Did this and confirmed not on the list so now it wears a DID HD chain fitted last week. Can confirm with post above bike rides shifts and feels exactly the same.
Have to say I asked to see ( and feel) old chain at change felt fine no o ring damage and side plates fine.
Silly question but it seems the F800 are failing more , is it a combination of extra 18 ish bhp plus some more travel?http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/250503/ne_nau.gif

My F800GS is about the same age, bike was at dealer for a service and the technician asked if I knew about the chain recall, and checked if mine was on the list, but it wasn't.
I can't say I have any complaints about the chain though. At just over 8000 miles it's only been adjusted a couple of times, and I've never had a problem with gear changes or driveline snatch.
Anyway, if needs be, I have a brand new chain from Greg Masters waiting in the garage for when it's needed. Hopefully this won't be soon.

My chain & sprockets changed recently by NOG, under recall at 8K, I experienced no problems before, and the old chain looked & felt OK:)
Same as freeloader, I have a spare heavy duty 525 chain, sat on the shelf, bought the day before the recall was announced :blast, from Greg Masters, I hope it carries on gathering dust...

Result.... I had a DID chain fitted last year by the dealer. Today I picked up a spare set of sprockets under warranty... He said i neednt bother with the chain as the new ones are made from monkey metal too.... i think the term was 'crap' that he used... So am sticking with the DID and have a spare set of sprockets now. Although mine look perfectly fine after 15k miles.

Good to find a dealer who tells it like it is. At least you know where you are rather than having platitudes thrown at you. :augie

Bahnstormer reckons my MY10 isn't covered by the recall, but I'm still not happy with the 'Miss Whiplash' effect :whip

Don't know in the UK, but here my dealer told me that yes there are no time limits for the recall BUT if something happens in the meantime, the dealer "might" be responsible and assume whatever cost it implies in case of... a crash/failure !

Just been out on my F650 08 since chain swap to DiD heavy duty x ring.
No more chain slap, shifts up from 2nd to 3rd and above better. None of the juddering I had before

Still get the big clunk when I select 1st

Looking at the chain it is a thing of beauty! at least I know it wont have me off

Fitted by Ribble Cycles Clitheroe

Hello ide508

is there also a recall on the chain of the 650 in Belgium then? Haven't heard anything from the dealer yet. :nenau

Gert

Hi Gert,

Yes there is a recall for the chain and sprockets. I have received the letter after I had the recall done by my dealer.:eek
Call BMW moto customer service in Boornem and give them your frame n°, they'll tell you if you're bike is concerned...

Perhaps you didn't receive it cause you're bike is not concerned ?

Cheers
Bernard
:beerjug:

Okay, thanks Bernard,

I will talk to the people in Bornem then.

My bike is a F60GS, bought new in 2008. So I would suspect that it has got the same chain installed.

Cheers,
Gert

I've been loosely following the chain failure & recall threads but as my chain hadn't needed adjusting (by me anyway - who knows whether the dealer did?) in 11k miles, I wasn't too concerned.

The chain has now developed a real tight spot and having adjusted it 3 times in the past 1700 miles/8 weeks to try and get rid of some of the horrendous slapping I phoned Bristol Motorrad today who confirmed my bike (May 08 F650GS 12.7k miles) was on the recall list.

Bike now booked in for chain and sprockets on July 6th. Hopefully the chain'll last another 3 weeks..............

@Gert and IDE508:

This recall could affect me in a positive way too !!! :D
I'll check my BMW dealer tomorrow afternoon, after work...I could phone the people at Bornem first, but hey...my dealer should do an effort too!
(also have to ask about the early wear on the 'steering head Bearings' too, mine failed at about 20K kms (hard spot) and were replaced at 32K kms....no warranty....)
I'll keep you all up to date.

Regards,
Ive

I had mine done last week at NOG at the same time they were changing the battery due to it not holding its charge.

Hopefully now all the issues are sorted.:nenau

Cheers

"Why does it always happen to me"!!
Took bike in for annual service and chain replacement, 5hours later after hanging around(home was 75 miles away) was told that the mecanic had sheared off a bolt on the chain guard. O.K. I thought annoying but its a warranty job so it won't cost me anything...wrong a seized bolt is down to me to pay to have put right! They gave me a bike to come home on (£6 a day for insurance), left my bike there in bits, they have got to get a local engineering firm to drill out the bolt tomorrow. Then I will have to go back hopefully on Wed to collect. What do you guys think? Should it be covered as part of the recall job or am I being unreasonable?

According to the service bulletin handed out to the dealers (& I have this on very good authority) seized bolts are not a warrantable item and never have been. If any bolts that have to be removed to enable chain & sprocket replacement then that is down to the customer. BMW will only pay for the labour for replacing said items.

sounds to me like another classic case of "BMW" making you pay, and more to the point why remove the chain guard to do a chain & sprocket change:blast

Thanks, Skywalker and Ghost rider, With 9500 mostly dry miles on a bike I have always cleaned after a ride sprayed with f365 then put in a dry garage it seems amazing that a bolt would seize.
