Finally got around to finish this off, yesterday

The main problem is that the G Series comes with axle nuts that require a 26mm spanner/socket - all very well in the comfort of your workshop, but not so out on the trail.

26mm is not a common wrench size and difficult to obtain a bike friendly wrench in this size

KTM's use a 27mm and I already had a KTM toolkit, with a 27mm axle wrench in it, so after reading about the simple conversion on ADV Rider..............I proceeded:D

The KTM Part no is 50310099000 and is a M20x1.5 pitch nut. Cost is £3.25 per nut from the Katoom dealer in town

Conveniently it is designed not to fill up with trail crud, unlike BMW's OEM offering:blast

The front fits on fine, with no adjustment, however you need to machine off the lip, so it fits snugly into the chain adjuster spacer on the rear - luckily my neighbour has a full machine tool workshop, very handy and duly obliged:clap

So all sorted now...................only taken me 3 years:blast

I thought the KTM nuts had an incorrect thread pitch?

I thought the KTM nuts had an incorrect thread pitch?

Worked ok for me, screwed up all the way by hand and torqued up to 80nM ok.....................I'll keep my eye on it

Front#s been on (and off) for a while now, with nothing adverse to report

I think it was a merkin problem, getting their heads around Metric threads and pitches:blast

Same thread pitch. Have had the ktm nuts on for 18 months or so.

Can't see the problem misen JB :JB

:beerjug:

Reference your machined nut ... it's got no washer or no 'shoulder', not good practice

Don't want to lug a socket and bar on the trail, just for days out:augie

Plus the KTM type, don't fill the hollow axles with crud and water:D

Mmmm... I'm out out for usually more than a day, like a week or more, and will carry a selected few sockets anyway. More than just my 'bike to 'sort' ;)

I'd rather the hollow axle remain hollow so that any water ingress can egress ;)

Still no washer or 'shoulder' ...

You could have just carried one decent quality adjustable spanner:confused:

Unless of very good quality they can slip and ruin the nut without loosening

A hammer and cold chisel, whilst still ruining the nut, seldom fails :JB

Just made a quick edit:D
I've seen several KTM spanners bent to the point of being useless when removing tight wheel nuts, then you have a problem:D

I bought a combination ring / open ended 26mm spanner and ground off the open end, shaping it like the end of a tyre lever. It lives under my seat, attached to the subframe rail with sticky-back velcro.

Yes, it's smaller external diameter than the nut

I'll graciously let you off then :JB

Great idea :thumb

heavy fu@kers - a decent quality adjustable!

I switched to the 27mm nuts so I could use the motion pro alloy combi tyre lever / 27mm spanner.

Saved me loads of weight on the steel tyre levers I was carrying, plus I could get ride of the heavy adjustable spanner (that was stripping the nut anyway).

I am a lot more cautious tightening the axle nuts tho ... with the steel nuts you could stand on the spanner to tighten it up ... I dont do that with the alloy nuts!

Yes mate, that makes sense.:thumb...although if I'm thinking of the same ones they're pretty expensive.
Loads of folk have bent their KTM spanners in the field after tightening the wheels up at home with something 'more substantial'.....

I guess at that moment a motion pro spanner would seem very cheap:D

EDIT: I was think of some titanium ones I'd seen:blast:blast so for my sins here the link to some Motion Pro spanners...might even bin my big adjustable for some now although my 640KTM ADV is 27mm rear, 32mm front ....£56 to remove both wheels!:D
