Changed my engine oil today

Finally got round to it today for the first time. Oil all over the place. Glugged in some nice clean 15/40 and wound up a new filter. Even gave the bash plate a little rub down. The thing is that the engine rattled loud and for a rather long time on start up. Is this normal? Didn't sound good.:eek:

BMW recommend 20W50 these days - 20W50 does lead to a quieter engine - best to change it again :D

I thought 20W50 was last year. They've changed their mind again haven't they. Obviously they may have changed their mind back again.

But 20w50 ain't the best for an extreme winter like what we're having.
 
Buy a pastic bowl from tescoe to collect oil when u drain it then pour old oil into empty oil can and recycle it. I learned that trick lasy year otherwise old oil goes all over place and yey fill up oil filter with oil before you attach it.:)
 
dont forget to subtract the amount of oil you put in the filter from the total you need to refill. Otherwise you over fill.

Isn't it good practive to screw in the new filter and then glug some nice new oil into the engine ????:augie:augie:augie

Could be messy otherwise, and I can imagine the engine would be a bit rattly:thumb2

Thought they had gone back to 20W50, but you are right in very cold weather 10W40 is probably best.
 
Yup, 10W50 is in my bike.
'10' for these kind of winters.
'50' seems to help the rattle of the distribution chain when engine's hot.
20W50 for higher ambient temps.

(oh dear, another oil thread :D)
 
Just completed own service at 24000 with 15-40 Semi Synthetic as recommended by my very own BMW mechanic and 2006 GS has always run on this and is fine:)

I wouldn't worry about the 14 days out of 4 months when the temp is below 50 degrees. The other 100 days are just as important. :D

Plus i wonder at the actual percentage of riders who actually use their bikes when the weather is that extreme. I think they'd have more to think about than if a 10 weight is rather more suitable than a 20 weight.

For those most concerned: Mix 20 / 50 fifty-fifty with 10 / 40 for a pleasing 'all seasons' 15 / 45.

Or carry out daily (at least hourly) average air temperature readings, maybe changing oil once, twice or more times in a day as the sun rises, shines and then sets and / or you climb up mountains or cross the death valleys of Nevada on the way to Tesco to buy root vegetables.

It makes me wonder why the oil companies ever bothered to produce mutiviscosity oil in the first place, such is its confusion. Designed as it was to remove the need to worry :D
 
do most people stick to service intervals for oil changes? Bought my 12GS in September, just had its 30k service, so in theory, nothing to do until 36k?
 
Just to answer the OP's original question.

A bit of rattle on start up after an oil change is fine, it's just the cam chain rattling about until pressure builds up in the hydraulic cam chain adjuster.

Same thing happens if the bike is laid up for a while or if the engine overheats.
