mines a 1200gs on 54 plate. 12000 mile on the clock coming up to end of warranty. thinking about changing it so i don't run past warranty period. what changes have been made to the 1200 since then ?? if any?????

new bike:
no hazard warning button (simply press both indicators)
sidestand repostioned
plastic bit at end of exhaust replaced with metal
indicators self cancel
really really crap toolkit (as opposed to really crap)
different turny handle thingy for the rear suspension :o

and the following, which are my perceptions
better acceleration
much less flat spot in the middle
ABS seems a lot smoother (on the old one, once the ABS kicked in and then let go, the bike seemed to be "off brakes" for a rather agricultural amount of time. Now it's feels more like car ABS but not as smooth. Maybe that's part of the upgrade
Exhaust makes a nice burble on the overrun, which the old one didn't
Tank range on the new one is less (but should get better with mileage)

Wild speculation - improved fit and finish. I think so, but it's still early days

Mines gone past the warranty period, and it works just the same!!!

Just gone from an '04 to an '06.

As well as the points mentioned above, the centre stand is SO much better. Almost effortless to lift the bike up now.

Gearbox changes a lot smoother.

The seat seems softer and has more "give".

Engine seems smoother.

New bikes will have a different clutch pressure plate. The manufacturer has just been changed due to the warm chocolate nature of some of the original ones.

Might be worth checking whether they REALLY don't. I thought there was a fault with my bike as the LHS indicators turned themselves off while I was sat at lights. Checked the owners manual and they turn off after (IIRC) approx 15sec or 200meters travelled. You may be manually cancelling them before they get a chance to self-cancel.... 15 sec is a long long time to have your indicators on...

It's not time related at all. You can wink all day long if you're stationary. The only time I've ever seen auto-cancel kick in (on my 04 bike) is indicating to turn off a slip road on the motorway. Would have been more like 500 meters I would think.

Fair Nuff Trip... wasn't sure of the exact figures (only read the section in the manual briefly, saw the words 'self cancel', a distance and I'm sure there was a time element too, but could be wrong) then went and had a play. Point i'm making (badly!!!) is that the indicators may be getting manually cancelled before the self cancel has a chance. That was certainly the case for me. Have a look in the manual re: indicators, see what it says, and then see if it works!!! :thumb Worked for me!!!

No. Just the same high quality unit with speedo accurate to within 1mph!! :thumb
Can't comment on the accuracy of the speedo (and yes, the old one is as good as you say) but the LCD bit is different. It is made up of segments like a Casio watch rather than the little square pixels of the old one. Someone else has reported this as well.

Pressurized: I must bow down to superior knowledge on this. I honestly have noticed no difference in my '04 GS and my wonderful '06 GSA. I am content to accept what you say about the unit, but I'm more than happy with mine. :D

And to add to the debate.........

I have a Sept. 05' 1200GS and my friend has just bought an 06' 1200GS. I've noticed that the display on the 06' model is different in its layout. The indicators self-cancel on both bikes and indeed, the preload knob for the rear suspension has changed. Also, the little guard around the sidestand switch is different too.

I've ridden my friend's bike and didn't notice any difference in performance at all. I can't comment on the operation of the ABS, as I've never had it operate yet. (Must be lucky eh!!)

One other difference I've noticed is the finish of the exhaust silencer.... my bike has a highly polished stainless finish, whereas my friend's exhaust is more of a dull titanium colour (both are standard BMW Exhausts)

Oh, just remembered.......... my bike has the 'R1200GS' decals on the plastic panels below the pillion seat, whereas my friends doesn't (very minor point I know, but I like the decals!!)

But at the end of the day, they're both feckin' excellent bikes!!!!

My GS is my 18th bike and it's the first time I've owned a bike and been really happy with it. For anyone thinking of buying one.... I'd highly recommend them - and it's true...... these bikes are a lot easier to ride fast round the twisties than sportsbikes, Im much quicker on this bike than I was on my 600RR.

Right, that's it.... train-spotter bit over, I'll go now before you all lose the will to live.....! ;)

Red-Devil.

Freezing hot

I always liked having a air temp gauge on my vfr before i got my 04 GS, just a masocistic desire to know exactly how cold a particular frosty morning likewise on a really hot day. The only thing i miss from the old bike, sad but true. Any sign of this addition on the latest bikes?
Now i have had all the glitches sorted under warranty i cannot think of any bike i would rather have at any money. How many car owners can truefully say this about their own vehicle....

??

My very early (Feb 2004) has this. I thought this was standard on all R12GS?

Note - I newer allow them to upgrade the software. On my bike I can switch on/off ABS while driving! :thumb

Indicators self cancel after time/distance something like 200mtrs or 20sec whatever is the longest :thumb
