Changing pre-planned routes on a 2610.

Just as I thought I was getting good at using the 2610, this crops up.

Using the "rubber band" in Mapsource I had planned and downloaded a brilliant scenic route home from the local BMW dealer. The problem, was that I was starting the route from a hotel - not from the dealers - but with the saved route "initiated" how do I then get onto the saved route, if you're not starting from the beginning of that route? I tried recalculating, but that just works out the route from the downloaded start point, not your current position.

So, I had a brainwave. Just mark the hotel as a waypoint and add it as a via point, but this just gives me a new route sending me along the motorway, not on the route I had carefully planned. What I did notice was that the screen then showed 2 highlited routes on screen (the original scenic one, and the boring motorway one). Even if I'd changed the preferences in the unit, to avoid motorways there is no way it would have chosen the route I had carefully planned on the computer. So, how should I have sorted it out?

This could be bollocks as I haven't used a 2610 in a while, but if memory serves can't you use the "goto" to route you to nearest viapoint on the route you want to ride, then you are on the route and can select it.

Don't recalculate a route downloaded to the GPS - it is not likely to end up the same as planned in Mapsource.

It doesn't really matter where you start a pre-planned route - if you start following it part way through the GPS will "realise" this - so I would have found a place on the pre-planned route nearest to where you actually were - then "Gone" there and then Activate the original pre-planned route and carried on.

The problem was that there were only 2 waypoints (the dealers, and home) the rest of the route had been "rubber banded" in Mapsource to use the roads I wanted.

... I would have found a place on the pre-planned route nearest to where you actually were - then "Gone" there and then Activate the original pre-planned route and carried on. (At least I think this is what you are saying the problem was)

This is roughly what I did in the end, as I knew that if I headed west, I would eventually cross the planned route. I obviously haven't explained it well - so imagine that the planned route was from Bristol to Birmingham, but I found myself starting from Gloucester.

I would suggest you activate your saved route so that you can view it, scroll across with the pointer to a point you want to join your save route, then press nav button and it will show options, one of which will be "go to ****** piont" press enter and then you can navigate to that point and then activate the saved route when you arrive at the end point. I have just tried this on my 276c and it worked perfectly and the nav will know you are starting your saved route and just continue from that point.

You are right. That is the way to do it and it works on all models.

An alternative is to set "Auto Zoom" to OFF, "Map Detail" to MOST and then zoom out until you see the route. Follow the roads on the map until you hit the route. When on the route the unit "snaps" to it and automatically starts guiding you.

Taff, I'm not sure I fully understand your question / problem, so I'm not going to try and answer your original post, however:

With respect to your comment quoted above "...there were only two waypoints...the rest had been rubber-banded...", be aware that whenever you modify a route by rubber-banding it in MapSource (manipulating the automatically generated route by dragging it to a certain spot with the pointer tool), you generate an invisible waypoint at each spot you drag the route to. In other words, if you generate a simple route from A to Z in MapSource, and MapSource calculates that route for you, and you then modify it by dragging it around to three intermediate points, you will now have a five waypoint route, even though you won't see the three intermediate points that you created when you dragged the route line to them.

I hope this information helps you figure out your problem.
