Bit of a strange query. But does a '98 1100GS need to have a functioning charge warning light to get the alternator working?

99.9% of the time the charge warning light doesn't come on when the ignition switch is switched on and I don't get 14v until about 3000 rpm. Once it gets to 14v then it stays at 14v even at idle. Any ideas?

Edit: Charge light blub is ok, swapped to oil pressure warning and it lights up, doesn't light up in charge position, and vice-versa for oil pressure blub.

Basically, yes. It sounds like your alternator brushes are getting worn. Check the wiring / lamp by earthing the small wire on the alternator - it should light with the ignition on. The brushes are usually replaced with the voltage regulator which is held on the back of the alternator with two screws. Get the Bosch number from it and order a new one from any Bosch agent. Pattern ones are available but they ain't as good;)

Some people will recommend changing the slip ring on the alternator at the same time but a) it's a fiddle and b) it's not normally required on a Bosch unit.
