Got my new top box from Civil today, and lovely it is too! Made from a sketch I sent him, well built, made quickly and very reasonably priced.

The shape is to allow the hinged lids of my existing panniers to open when they're fitted, and it's big enough to take a couple of helmets. There's a lockable cubby hole underneath that I'll stick my padlock and chain into; again, that's sized around the existing panniers.

Civil has done a great job, and suggested a few sensible adjustments before making it, such as making the cubby hole/mounting plate from 1.5mm steel for additional strength.

Yep it's big + ugly (ooo, just like me!) but it's been built for carrying all the chuff that I have to lug around with me. :thumb

Sod that, the thing's big enough he could bake it at the door!!!

Exhaust position

Never mind the box. What did you do to reposition the exhaust and get it so far back :thumb

Hate to ask this...

Er, it might just be me, but isn't that going to put an awful lot of weight on the rack mounting? With the weight at the top like that it must have quite a significant moment arm acting on the mountings of the rack.

I woz just arsking because of the number of "my topbox fell off!" stories on here.

Maybe it bolts onto the subframe in some ingenious way I don't see to increase strength, or am I being an old woman about this?

How many does it sleep. Early stages of GS turning into a "caravan". aaaaaaaaarrghhhhhhhhhhhhh.

A few answers to for your info:

The exhaust is from Metal Mule to use with their panniers - it allows the two panniers to be the same size. It's made by Scorpion and bolts directly onto the Y-piece.

Yes, if I loaded it with bricks it will probably fall off. However, most of the time it is going to be empty. It's main purpose is for when I go to meetings, I can just dump all of my bike clobber into it and be off, looking (semi) respectable; well, with clean jeans at any rate.

Fuggin Ell! How does it effect unsprung weight

It's one of Civils' ally constructions, so it weighs about the same as the Givi Maxi that it has replaced.

Hope you know how to handle wheelies Dave

"I'm sorry officer, the topbox made me do it."

of the subject what is your seat ((it looks like a sargent ?) Is it any Good?

Thanks

Yes and yes. I prefer it to the standard Adv seat - you don't 'slide' towards the front.
