I'm after some advice as to what is the best thing to use to clean up the black finish on adventure wheels. My back one is pitted and i'd like to know if there's anything I can use to clear this up.:beerjug:

Same here... Black spoked wheels on my ADV..... I just spray a bit of WD40 onto a rag and give it wipe over. I run a dry rag around it after just to make sure that any WD doesn't spin off onto the tyre after I start riding.

if they are pitted then thats that,my adv wires live in the loft in winter,i have a pair of cast wheels for the shitty winter comutes.

Tar spots will make the rim feel rough. WD40 is a good cleaner. ACF-50 is needed on every spoke hole to reduce the alloy corrosion caused by the stainless spokes.

A few dribbles onto the tyre will make no difference. Just avoid spilling the whole bottle over the tyre. :-)

I have spare cast wheels too the spoked ones are a pain in the arse to clean, I put new tyres on the spoked and use them for touring and cast ones for running around.

Will try the wd40, but doesnt it attract dust and grime?

ACF50 will be better than WD40. Buy some, and then using it very sparingly with a brush, just coat where the spokes go into the rim.

Jeez old son, your wheels are going to get covered in shite, dust and grime no matter what so if you are expecting to ride to Tesco with constantly shiny wheels, you've had it. WD will actually leave a sliht coating on the rims which makes them easier to clean if that's your bag.

To the OP, if your wheels are pitted, you won't get rid of that unless you go for a powder coat which will mean new spokes and a wheel rebuild so prepare to raid the piggy bank.

I use turtle wax car shampoo (after lesson learnt with muc off) in a fairly concentrated mix, scrub with Tesco soft bristle brush & finish off with Sdoc cleaner, I do apply acf50 to spokes, I think it needs it...
But an hour a wheel is needed..

snaponphil, what is the issue with Muck Off? I've a bottle in the garage, should it stay there? Thanks.

I've never had any issues with muck off my rear rim is pitted though but that seems to be a r1200 thing.

Mucoff is effective but aggressively alkaline which will attack bare aluminium. Alloy wheel cleaner which is acidic is less harmful to aluminium.

FWIW, A Honda dealer, as part of a routine service, washed my CBR6 with Muc Off and it left a stained effect on the engine cases. I was disgruntled, but couldn't do anything as I couldn't prove the stained effect wasn't there before I brought the old bike in. Then I bought a second hand Blade bike from them. Lo and behold, upon picking it up, the same problem was there, only worse. The dealer changed both engine cases free of charge which must have cost them a pretty penny.

From conversations, I have heard it said that this problem can occur if you leave Muc Off to dry, or if it is applied to hot components. Be very careful, therefore, if you're washing your bike in the sun and go for a cuppa.

Personally, I avoid it like the plague and enquire whether a dealer uses it. If they do, I ask them not to wash the bike.

My bike was garaged, hardly ever used on salty roads and washed regularly with MucOff. The hubs and rim spoke holes are corroding as well as front engine case and even steel parts like the rear frame. It looked great when I bought it but the rot went ballistic after a few months with me. I keep it outside which isnt ideal, but use ACF 50. The levels of corrosion dont add up for a bike that's spent its first four years being cosseted.

My brother's 08 spent its first 4 years being polished and washed with car shampoo. His has virtually no corrosion.

I might simply be unlucky but don't believe in coincidence so avoid using MucOff.

Hi, I think it's a pretty well known thing now, but it discoloured a virtually new F800gs a few years back, the black rims & engine casings, didn't leave it on any length of time & used it from a hand sprayer with a brush, I didn't know what caused it at first but it sorta bleached the colour away..
Used it later in the day on some plastic motorcycle parts, side panels I think, they went all dull, never looked the same again & only when I put 2 & 2 together I realised what caused it.
Has it's uses tho, but be very careful..

Get some GT85 - push bike lubricant. Has teflon - so coats wheel in non-sticky protection, gets brake dust off a treat too!!

Just to say I use a Silicon spray (ensure its the conditioning type). I use TECTANE SL527 on black engine cases and on the wheels/spokes. Particularly the front cases where they suffer around the bolt holes. It seeps everywhere. It polishes a treat makes it look shiny if you like all that (I do as resale values are higher and the bike cost me money) and the silicon doesn't show at all. Mask your discs if your going mad with it as it "floats" in the air in a kind of mist. Kin brilliant at keeping two different metals from corroding. Salt hasn't touched it over winter, not a mark. Plastics done mark and look conditioned to.
People comment my bikes look new. Don't tell anyone all I do is spray and wipe lightly once its washed. Cheap too.
Its a layer on your screen too once sprayed and polished and all the flies and traffic wardens just seems to fall off with moist cloth and no scratching! I wiz it around the underneath of the bike and linkages and the dirt hasn't managed to stick.
Just thought I would say what I have found that works. If you want a pic of the Rocket 111 that was ridden all over the UK/continent in all weathers till I got the GSA I will post it. Looks absolutely brand new. 50K and mint. Yes I am a Virgo with OCD.
And all for a can for £5.00 once in a while. Just keep the garage door open cos its not good to inhale.
That's me done folks. Worth trying? What you got to lose?

Well, you sold it to me, I'll give some a bash, cheers!

I have had similar experience with muc off, never use it again. Where is the best place to get Tectane SL 527? sounds like it is worth a try
