Hi all,

Had a bit of a fight to get some bolts out today, the bolt threads were covered in what looked like a very finely powdered rust. I don't think these bolts had been removed in the 8 odd years since the bike was built. Anyone recommend a way of cleaning all the crud and debris out of the threads in the bolt hole? The threads themselves are all in good confition and just need a clean.

Also, anyone recomment a source for new stainless steel bolts? Couple of the ones I've pulled have a little damage to the heads and I'd rather replace with new. I know Motorworks to a kit of bolts, but I only need a couple not an entire set.

Cheers

Matt

Try the gs shop, link is at the top of the page, I saw a bolt set on there yesterday.

Have you got an air compressor? give the holes a squirt with wd40 and then a blast with the air.

I tend to put bolts back in with a bit of copper ease on them. careful that you don't over torque them though.

I will be cleaning up the bolts and applying copper slip whent he bolts go back in, just don't want any crud messing anything up.

Cheers

tap and die set for cleaning /restoring threads :nenau?

They're not expensive and will pay for themselves in no time.

+1 GS shop. :thumb2

Had mine delivered a couple of weeks ago. Superb.

Don't forget anti seize though and easy with the torque wrench.

Special thread restorer set will provide less chance for 'messing up' the old threads which a tap and die set could do in the wrong hands? (Just a thought.)

Google 'thread restorer'. Ebay is a good place to find'em as I got a set of snap on's.
These will help clean up a damaged thread whereasa a tapping tool will recut an existing cut thread if it is already damaged and leave less meat in the hole.

Check eBay re Stainless sets. I bought one a couple of years back and they are good and also very cheap. Being tight and cosmetically lazy i never fitted them and now use them for spares! Well, theres far too bloody many to be bothered with!:D
