Stopped to fill my bike with petrol this morning and upon returning to it found that the engine would not start.
Display went through the usual start up routine but after waiting for this to complete and pressing the starter i was met with a click , click , click click , with the EWS symbol showing.
After waiting for recovery for an hour i tried to start it again and it fired up as normal. Needless to say i looked a bit of a clown to the RAC gent.
Upon speaking with BMW they say it's more than likely an EWS antenna failiure. Apparently there is a recall for this issue. Upon checking my reg ,Bmw was informed me that my bike is not affected by this recall (?) and that if it is indeed an EWS failure i will need to pay for any repairs. What are the bikes affected by this recall , mine is an 05 1200gs , i have no qualms with paying for repairs to my bike but there's obviously a well known issue with this part and if there is a recall shouldn't it affect all 1200's ? The bike is currently at BMW Williams being looked over , any else had similar issues with the EWS and just had the bike start up again out of the blue :nenau

I have heard of immobiliser's being effected near garage forecourts (something to do with there security cameras or something:confused:)if your bike is ok now maybe it's that? Otherwise don't think the antenna is a big job to change.

Hi Keff,
I have an '05 1200RT and ask every dealer the same question about the EWS. The older machines were not subject the the widespread failure of the EWS module - caused, I think, by a change of supplier for the component.

You should think seriously about having the CanBus fuel pump controller changed if the bike has not already had the modified version put in.

When my EWS failed, I got an intermittent failure first then it went permanently. If your dealer is offering to change it FOC, I would get it done. The guys are NOG did mine and told that they haven't had any of the new ones back yet - they seem pretty convinced the new ones have solved the issue...

Sounds like low battery voltage, which could be a poor terminal connection or a battery not long for this world. I had this, with EWS on my 05 GS. New battery fixed the 'no start/start in a while' problem. But an intermittent EWS problem remained. Not the antenna though. Dud kill switch messing up the start up sequence.
