Clocks stolen

I did bit of DIY on my GS today and I stripped its front to fit Cymarc's clocks brace. While on this job I wanted to find out how easy/difficult it is to take clocks and front LED. I must say...whoever designed this should have been sacked! I think accountants were involved in this design process as well, as in current design it takes no time to fit clocks and headlamp to the bike on assembly line, but at the same time they made it so easy for thieves to take our parts!

After fixing brace I am bit more relaxed about clocks ( engraved my reg number and wrote "STOLEN" at the back), I also turned around circlip so it is not exposing edge which you can grab it to pull it out, but I am bit terrified about LEDs, as they might take bit more time than removing clocks, but no more than 60 seconds if two fellas are working on the bike! Nicked LEDs however will be most likely slightly damaged, as there is slim chance pulling them out without breaking two plastic pins which are resting in rubber grommets. I have seen already on Ebay acution where seller is advising about this culrpit and I am now 100% convinced that they came from illegal source!

PS. Cymarc clock brace looks really well once fitted. I had my reservations initially, that this bit of metal would spoil look of bike's instrument cluster, but once I fitted it looks pretty much like my bike left factory with it! Big thanks to Mark for his excellent design.

PS2. I'll contact Mark and pass my comments regarding securing LEDs if he hasn't come up yet with anything. I think it would be really simple and would add extra time to remove them from the bike.

Here are pictures of my bike while working on it.

the interesting thing for me about this issue is that the market for s/h clocks is probably quite small in the normal way of things. the fuckers stealing them are actually creating the market for their own products!

the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in the criminal world.

What I want to know is what the fxxx the police are doing about this. Given most clocks on eBay are potentially stolen strikes me this can be stamped on with a bit of detective work. Or are police there just to harass motorists?

I engraved my reg number and put "STOLEN" on it, so if shit happens to my bike's clock..someone who will try to sell them will have bit of stigma on them, so no close ups on rear side of clocks. :beerjug:

Bloody sad

Bloody sad that as already posted the Plod ain`t coming down on these obvious ebay thefts.

I`m pleased that something I`ve done might slow the thieving scum down.

You have imagination, a PC, access to the internet, the ability to sort wheat from chaff on Ebay and an obviously keen interest in assisting biker mates in their distress. What are you waiting for?

Probably the same as you

Me? I think plod will (quite rightly) not be bothered by a bit of extra vehicle crime, most or all of which is covered by insurance. They might be interested if they trip over a shed / warehouse stacked up with parts, the provenance of which is difficult for the shed's owner to explain.

Up 'til then? It's up to you and your sleuthing abilities. Your audience awaits, mate....

Three and a half million items on eBay at the moment in the bike/motors parts and accessories section.
Yes, I wonder what will be done specifically about the bmw gs clocks...

Ffs.

Is a pre requisite to be unreasonable about what we can investigate? I reckon with 4 million items, most of which is difficult to impossible to prove is actually stolen, with a team of investigation experts on here, it should take about 400 years to successfully clear the backlog. Possibly a bit longer.

In all seriousness, the best thing to do with these easily stolen clocks is to get that plate mark Hooton makes. What else can you really do except be insured?

I..... engraved my reg number and wrote "STOLEN" at the back....

So, when your bike is (maybe inevitably) crashed - or stolen and subsequently crashed - then subsequently and quite legitimately written off and broken-up for parts, what happens then?

Just because a bod has scratched a registration number and the word 'Stolen' onto anything does not mean that someone's subsequent possession of the item is automatically wrong or illegitimate. A simple fact that Jumblemo's sleuth team will have to take into account whilst they trawl through and cross-reference the 4,000,000 items on EBay.

it woud help me to trawl ebay for my item, and also hopefully eBay seller not posting hot item with engraved reg on eBay. And also if someone bought it from eBay with these marks engraved, he would then take it with police if he had a bit of honesty.
