clunk

ok, i can see a time when i might be able to look into the annoying clunk more thoroughly.

friend was round today and we had a look at transmission lash at the rear wheel. little free movement, but turning the wheel soon came up against springy resistance. thing is, it wasn't very springy, and the wheel was quite easy to turn appreciably against it. mate said that was not normal. me having no previous of monos am unsure, but it doesn't seem right.
there would be much more resistance on the rubber cushed para shaft.

what does the panel think?

sounds like a loose transmission damper - if they have one

that's what i'm thinking.

there's two. one in the shaft and one in the gearbox.

steptoe suggested this might be the problem many posts ago :)

Well your gearbox is a fully rebuilt unit from Sherlocks ( so that'll be ok :bounce1)....and I've never had any problems with any of the driveshafts on any of my g/s's.:)

You need to compare it with another g/s...like for like, then you'll know it it is OK or not :)

Anyone live near cookie..anyone want to get to know him?:ymca

Cookie

just another one to add to the extensive list

does it happen every time - if not are the rear brake shoes sticking to the drum and then releasing when you ride off

and the correct answer is.....

...it was the clutch release bearing sticking in the gearbox cover plate.

old style ally one fitted measured up oversize, and had a few marks on the side where it had picked up. i also remembered that it only really clunked when it got warmed up, which seemed consistent with the sticky bearing housing issue i've read about.
i really wasn't convinced, but i fitted a new style placcy one anyway, and it's all gone quiet :bounce1

so a big thanks to rob farmer for suggesting that might be the cause, and i owe you a pint next time i see you :)

I would of said it was probably a clunk as you rode over Kenny as he lay underneath the bike trying to steal bits off it :D
