Clutch confusion!

There I was riding my 1999 GS1100 up the M40 yesterday, and all was ok until I got to Oxford, by which time there was so much free play in the cable that it was almost causing the clutch to drag. It was fine when I started the trip, and because it was mainly all motorway I had hardly used the clutch at all. Any ideas why it suddenly developed so much free play? To get me home I simply took up the play at the lever end, and will do a proper job tonight, but I am confused as to what caused this to happen.

Any help gratefully received

Cheers

Two things can cause this. One is simple and is financially non-threatening, the other will involve cost and much faffing and swearing and the odd abrasion on hands/fingers

Painless option = the adjuster on the clutch arm at the gearbox end has worked loose - Cure, re-adjust it. But it will cost you if you've lost the adjusting bolt and lock nut.

Painful option = the clutch thrust piston has decided to call it a day - Cure, new thrust piston; with the necessary faffing around to remove and replace the clutch arm to replace the thrust piston.

You forget to include the swearing, cursing, head banging etc thats included :D Bustard of a job. Bit easier if you are a bit smaller than your average gser.

Nice & Easy...

Thnx for the responses, the locknut had worked loose, but the adjuster was still hanging on in there, so I was able to sort it without any grief. that's something you won't need to sort on Tuesday for me Steptoe!

Cheers
